Help- hard to tell where oil is on dip stick

I thought I was just having difficulty reading the stick. I laid it on a clean paper towel and figured out the oil was low enough that the stick didn't have any! :mur:

I went to a JD dealer today and used the part number I referenced in a previous post. One bottle (supposed to treat 5 gallons of fluid) was a little over $5. I should have it Saturday or Monday. I'll post results.

What does JD call this dye? What was it's intended use? I can see how it would make reading the level easier, I just wonder why it isn't added to the trans fluid at the factory.:confused3:

I have a 2006 Chev Colorado. It is imposible to read the dipstick. It picks up oil residue if you pull it out of the tube.
Now if I change oil I know there was still oil in the engine. I have been thinking of making some kind of vertcal cut in the dipstick
