My post was meant to be helpful but it seems that you took it a bit personal because I countered your advice with a warning.

The information I provided about Fram oil filters and their poor internal construction is just as relevant today as it was then, a fact that I confirmed prior to posting it. The link was only meant to help illustrate the bad experience I had with Fram oil filters which caused an engine failure, but if you insist on seeing something more recent it's not difficult to find.

BTW: The following video shows what a Fram oil filter looks like when it fails, which happens to be very similar to what I found after cutting apart a new Fram oil filter (less than 50 miles on it) that failed and destroyed a newly rebuilt car engine.

Show us some data on a Massey Ferguson tractor failing with a spin on oil filter. You links may reference auto engines, but tractor RPM's run at a much slower rate. I would really like to see proof of your warning on tractors and said filter. If not then your warning pertaining to this thread on tractors is not gospel. No need to be chicken little here.

On my newly purchased 1965 continental gas massey it already had an aftermarket screw on filter. I removed said filter and went to NAPA for a replacement filter. NAPA was super helpful(no massey dealer is close). The filter that i took off had 5 or so holes that matched up with the plate on the engine block whereas the new filter only has 2 small holes. Does this matter? Here is an ebay ad showing the type filter I removed.

John, I'd go back with the same as you have and illustrated. The more circulation the better. More holes, IMHO would produce a higher flow rate. That doesn't mean less holes works any less. The filter with less holes may have less restrictive flow rate.

I've been considering going to a spin on filter but I can't seem to get over the risk of it being damaged while in the woods. Has anyone with this set-up who uses their tractor for woods work ever had an issue?

Is the kit for the Perkins work on the Continental? I've thought about it as well, but haven't seen one that said it was for the Continental.

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but could you please explain how pointing out that Fram oil filters (which come with most spin-on kits) might fail is "crap" and "completely lost" to the original intent of this thread?

You asked for more recent evidence and I provided precisely that.

everyone is allowed to believe what they want. I'll preface my post with that.

I've a fleet of just over 20 tractors.. and a few automobiles. My 98 dodge ram truck ran from 99 to the beginning of 2012 with fram, and then fram tough guard oil filters.. instaleld by me. when i got it nearly new.. it had a fram on it. I sold it to work earlier this year after I got another diesel... I gave them the one extra filter I had for it. it got an oil change using that filter recently. it will likely get a napa filter on it next as that is what work uses. truck has over 200K on it now. PS.. the truck also got walmart supertech 10w30 oil with no extra additives.. no stp.. etc. just 3000-3500mile oil changes with filter, including a fram air fitler.

my 2000 yukon had the same, with a couple exceptions. the first 2 ys it got dealer svc oil changes for free.. thus ac delco fitlers. after that it got supertech oil and fram fitlers.. then about a year ago the wife started taking it to the quick change palce.. and the filters are some unknown brand that looks like purolator if I had to guess.. after they overchargerd her i switched back to my own oil svc... am inthe process of trying a different oil right now.. not due to lube problems.. just some personal research on consumption based on miles in that 5.3 vortec. during this time I've switched to ac delco fitlers again. i can actually get them as cheap as fram...

of my tractors... with the exception of the 2 larger diesels.. they run cnh filters.. thought one of them came used of course.. with a fram.

all the others with spin on or common cartridge get fram. I have a couple rowcrops and laoder models I run a super tech as it is lower profile. and fits easier... most of those are getting walmart oil now.. though in the past I have used napa hpouse brand and traveler TSC brand.. whatever was cheaper. i do have a couple units using a special diesel oil, and one on a synthetic oil since I went thru the engine earlier this year.

I used to cut fitlers open to just look at them. after a couple years it became a chore... int he end.. not much difference.

only times I've had a lube issue on a tractor is when napa made a filter for the repalcement of the fram c159 fitler that is a floss media packed filter.. and napa decided to make it a peper pleat, and allis chalmers machines everywhere lost oil pressure well.. the fram floss filter still worked fine..


I use napa oil fitlers for my power stroke diesels... havn't seen a fram replacement anyway.. thought the nap is cheap enough.

i think alot of people get worked up about ancedotal evidence.. still.. it's anyone's discretion to run any oil. expensive or not. I think some are too spendy.. won't hurt.. probably can't help.. but whatever..

any machine I get that has a factor cannister with cartridge.. i leave it on. it's thicker metal than a spin on.

i HAVE had a spin on poked or dented by a stick before. some just cosmetically.. some enough to make the seal leak. IMHO.. canister is better setup./ thicker metal..e tc. your call. probably such a close % issue anyway will lielky not make a useable differance.

I have heard that the canister filters actually filter better that the spin on filters. Maybe more filter area? Alit of companies are going back that way.

ive never measured surface area of media in a machine that had cartridge or spin on media .. but guess I could on next oil change. for instance.. a napa 1452 and a 1004 are spin on and cartridge filters for common ford tractors from 55-64 I have plenty of each type machine ( fram # ph8a and ch6pl ).. next oil change I'll cut can and delampinate filter media to measure surface area.
