Bought this cutter last year for a couple hundred bucks. Works like a champ but the gasket andseal on the output shaft of the right angle gearbox are leaking so I need to get a gasket and seal. The unit was repainted at some point and I haven't been able to find any mosdel/serial #'s on it so I'm putting it out here for all of you to look at.

Thought it might be a Howes but the gearbox mounting isn't quite right so...

Any ideas?

I cant put a finger on a model # for you, but it certainly looks like a bushhog brand cutter.

are their any numbers or tags?? older bushhogs had a metal tag with numbers stamped in. Could just be painted over???? any #'s on the gearbox??

Don't know who made it though like LD1 and you state it does have certain characteristics of a Howse and or Bush-Hog brand.
Looks like thats a 40 HP rated gear box. If you get no answers here I would un-bolt/expose whole gearbox. You might find something stamped or a small sticker or plate behind those v-shape brackets. Lots of those gearboxs were generic to different bushhog buiders. Don't mean that in a bad way.Just like to-day most of those gearboxes made in China .
When you can see gearbox better you can even go to goggle/bush hog gearbox "Images" and match up. Parts should not be hard to find. You got a great deal IMO that Hog looks well made. Just my thoughts.

I forgot to mention though, if it were mine, and I couldnt find a make/model, just take it appart down to the culprit bad seal, and then go to napa or somewhere online and buy the seal by size. Probabally cheaper than through the MFG anyway.

If you run across any gaskets, just use RTV

Thats what I would do. You dont need to know the MFG to swap a seal out. Now if you find a shaft or something is bad, then ya need to know. But seals and bearings, just buy by size and/or the number on the seal itself.

It looks familiar, but I can't put a handle on it. The deck really looks like a BH brand, but the gearbox seems wrong. :confused3: It doesn't really matter.
Like Boone said, most of those gear boxes are generic. There's only a handfull of manufacturers, so it shouldn't be hard to get the part. Just pull the old one and take it with you.

Thats kinda what I thought. Deck, tailwheel, and A-frame look bushhog. But the gearbox dont. The gearbox looks like older woods. Cause I dont know of any bushhog brand cutters that the gearbox bolted to the sides. But the older woods did. But the tailwheel and a-frame are wrong for woods.

It doesn't really matter.

Agreed. For just a seal or bearings, it dont matter much.

Agreed, just hoping to have all the parts on hand before I tear in to it.

At least I don't feel too badly, your comments reflect what I'd been thinking :confused2:. It's the way that the gearbox is mounted that has kept me guessing, but, as someone posted earlier, a lot of them are manufatured by the same people . If I can't get an ID, I plan to do just what was suggested, tear it apart and then go down to the local auto parts store and get the seal.

Thanks!
