Hi, Folks,

If all goes well, I'll soon be the owner of a 72 acre property in Niagara county, NY. I need to have a few acres fenced (to keep my GSP from running off) and was hoping for some recommendations for contractors in the Lockport/Middleport area.

Any experiences regarding woven wire vs chain link fencing for dog fencing would also be appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe

Don't live in that area, so no help with contractors.

Chain link costs more, but if the area you intend to fence is not too large, it is probably worth the extra money. It lasts longer, the top pipe keeps it looking good, nice gates are available from small narrow to tractor drive-through size. If you have a stiffening cable installed around the bottom, it helps prevent dogs trying to squeeze out under the fence, chain link is easy to repair or patch-in a section that got bent.

We had a six foot tall chain link fence installed this spring. Right around $10 a foot, the fence is about 330' total length, has two small gates and one 8' double gate. Three guys put it in in a short days work. They had a pneumatic post driver :)

I went with 6' tall because we have large dogs and we can get deep snows. If the snow gets a crust on it enough to support the dogs, they will walk right over a short fence, or learn to jump the fence if it is short enough. Years ago my Dad had a Brittany that started by hopping over the fence when it was snowed in. By spring he could clear the whole 4' fence from a standing start.

i am not from the area and do not know what a GSP is. but I do know this, chain link lasts a long long time. My only problem ever was the expense

Well, since a GSD is a German Shepherd Dog, maybe a GSP is a German Shepherd Puppy. :)

Thanks for the replies, folks. GSP stands for German Shorthaired Pointer. Mine's about 5 (got him from a shelter so don't know for sure) and generally obedient unless there's a critter of some kind to chase.
