Burned Eyes

   / Burned Eyes #21
While it is a common occurence among welders, for the most part, most of us that suffer from this are just lucky. It can happen even if you are using the hood due to reflected rays of UV off your shirt into the hood or off a reflective item near your hood etc.

The eye is a precious resource and you have to realize that you are burning the cornea, if memory serves, while it will self-heal in about 24 hours, damage is still being done.

After well over 40 years of welding I can say I've suffered from being inattentive to the safety of my eyes and have paid a dear price for it later in life.

My suggestion for the individual is not risk ever having a flash-burn of the eyes.

Realizing that the intent of the thread is for the benefit of your furry friends, ie dogs, cats, beer drinking friends, they will usually run and hide or at least move to a safer location once the arc is struck, but it is advisable to place some sort of shielding twixt them and the arc, just in case you Lab has had too much to drink.

OMG, no one asked him if he was crazy for having 6 border collies, lol. I have one, and she is a handfull, along with my six other dogs, lol. All my dogs leave as soon as I start welding. If I am doing a lot of welding, I make sure they can not get near me....

If you like the hood you have now, you can buy this type of auto lens. I switched a year or so ago, and just love it.

That's a pretty cool little product. Thanks for the link, Shield Arc. I've already got an auto-dark helmet but you never know when this type of product might come in handy.

Eye sight is pretty precious and damage isn't always obvious nor immediate. Sometimes it is cumulative and you might not even realize it is happening.

I did in grad school in the mid 1960s using a gas welder and badly fitting goggles. Felt like sand in the outside corners of my eyes. ER docter had an ointment that gave immediate relief. Itching was gone in two or three days.
