hawks000 and Domush,
Yanmar published an update many years ago that .006" valve clearance was a misprint, it should be .008" cold.
They even had new decals at one time to put over top of the decals that came on the engines which had the misprint.

OK I seriously have a question now.... You state the valve clearance is supposed to be .008 After putting on the head (and adjusting to .008) I went to instll the vavle cover ...well low & behold... it had a sticker on it showing how to adjust the vavles & that it should be set to .018 ?? so can someone clarify. I am 99% sure this is a facotry sticker?

Not trying to speak for that guy but jmo... It's not going to matter as long as they are not tight and they are all the same looser will be noisier is all. Just set it at something between .006-.008" and go on is my advice the difference between .006 and .008" is splitting hairs literally.

I personally would NOT set them at .018 that will make noise. My 336 manual says .006".

On the other hand someone on here may be aware of the .008" or even the .018" spec and will chime in but as long as I have been here that is the first I have heard of either fwtw.

Do you have a pic of that sticker either one of you guys? Just saying so we have it documented for future reference in case this comes up again which it will.

I attempted to edit my last post but what I intended to say was technically valve lash has a direct influence on valve event timing and total lift. so an overly loose valve will ****** intake valve opening and advance exhaust valve closing and reduce total lift. what noticeable effect that will have on this particular engine is arguable but is a fact nonetheless. it will reduce the power I am 99% positive on that. fwtw

I think my service manual says between .006 and .008, but on Hoye's site they say many JD techs and deisel mecanics say to just set them all at .006. Hoye does this kind of stuff and i dont think they will put that on their site if it was wrong, i think the liability would kill them if it was wrong. Im not a good enough mecanic to actually realize the inner workings of this all, but do know what the clearance is and that they do need to be adjusted.

ok SOrry guess.. I feel stupid now... Finally got time to really look at the sticker (which was torn & had gunk all over it) well the .018 was mm... then I could just see a 6 below that with inch wrote on the end of it... :mur: it also said to adjust them every 300 hours... SO things for discussing this with me...even though I feel like a D A now LOL .. maybe soon I can get the motor on the tractor & try it out.
Again thanks Guys

Hey, that sounds like something I would do. I find it interesting because .18mm = .0070866". There are some Yanmars with valves set on .006" and some at .008". Hope y'all don't want proof of that. .006" = .15239mm, .008" = .20319mm I actually go for .007" when I set my 2002d. I personally believe anything from .006" to .008" and all these old Yanmars will purrrrrr!

Welcome and thanks for clearing that up!

There is never a dumb question as far as I am concerned and if we can help we will and nobody will think anything of it one way or the other good luck!
