Kohler Pro versus Briggs & Stratton Pro Commericial Engines

If you had to choose between a 30hp Kohler Command 725cc V-Twin engine rated at 47 ft. lbs. of torque at 2600 rpm versus a Briggs & Stratton Commercial Cyclonic 810cc 90 Degree V-Twin engine rated at 42 ft. lbs. of torque at 2400 rpm, which would you choose and why?

I don't think I have enough information. The Kohler has higher power and torque, which are both good. However, do you need all of the power and would the briggs meet your needs and is it lower cost? BTW, the Kohler will have even higher torque at 2400 rpm. IF price was not an issue I would get the Kohler.

They are both the same price and are choices on a 1100+ pound Zero Turn mower. I guess what's important would be performance, reliability and fuel consumption.

Not sure if still valid today but about five or six years ago Kohler had a real problem with starting on cooler days. Once running they ran OK. I would look at how difficult it is to do routine maintenace / service on them. I.e. Can i access the oil drain plug, oil filter, spark plugs, etc. Some zero turns / mowers in general do NOT take these items into account while on the drawing board.

30 HP is their an option for Diesel?

I don't know anything about the B&S commercial engines, so my first choice would be the Kawasaki you didn't mention. The second would be the Briggs. ;)

Why? Because Kohler makes both engines and toilets. Sometimes you can't tell which is which.

Thanks for the tips on maintenance ease to look at(had'nt relly thought about that). A ZTR model up has diesel, but almost all diesel-pushers are out of my price range.

Yeah, Kawasaki is my first choice in engines but this particular ZTR only has the two engines I mentioned as an option. Kohler(except for the Courage series) was actually my second choice with Briggs my third(still a bad taste in my mouth from the current Vanguard ITEK 24hp having the choke cable break inside the carb...just out of warranty). My first lawn tractor(1992 True Value Lawn Chief) had a 16HP B & S Vanguard that ran circles around this 2007 24hp(and my son is still using that old Lawn Chief after 20 years)!!! Other that replacing a few idler pulleys, belts and finally after 15 years one spindle that was one heck of a little lawn tractor.

Kohler has their service and owners manuals on line. Take a look a what it takes to service the machine. Can you perform all the required maintenance without pulling the engine?

Also, go to http://lawnsite.com and see what the pros think of those engines.
