Florence Child Dies in Tractor Accident
FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) Florence Police say a six-year-old girl died Sunday evening while riding with her mother on a lawn tractor.

According to investigators, the mother was cutting grass at their home on West Meadowhill Drive in Florence when the incident happened.

Police say the six-year-old girl fell off the back of the tractor and was run over by a mower attachment being pulled behind the tractor.

Florence Fire and Rescue and ambulance personnel transported the child to ECM Hospital in Florence, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

蜈ｸhere is no reason to believe that this is anything other than an accident, said Florence Detective Drew Harless. 逧д逞ｴ a very unfortunate incident that occurred, one of the worst I have ever had to work.

Because of the child逞ｴ age, an autopsy will be performed by the Alabama Department of Forensics.

A six-year-old girl was killed in a lawn mower accident Sunday evening.

Investigators said Colleen Persell was riding on a tractor with her mother at their home on Meadow Hill Drive, off of Robbins Ridge Road, when she fell off and was run over by the mower attachment.

She was rushed to Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Colleen was a student at Kilby Laboratory School on the campus of the University of North Alabama.

I know them also. It is heartbreaking. Holly loves her children very much and this is a life altering event for many people. Colleen was a very precious girl. It seems it takes a tragedy to bring safety back to the front.

I wish they would quit referring to these as "accidents". That word gives some people the impression that "nothing could be done to prevent it" when in fact one simple thing could have been done to prevent it...not letting the kid ride along!

Preach it brother!! I cringe every time I happen to see a child being ridden on riding mower, tractor, or piece of heavy equipment. Give it enough chances and sooner or later something will probably happen that have could have been prevented. Children just have no business being on or around powered equipment.

Now another family has to suffer the loss of a little child just so she could have a little "fun" riding with mom on the mower.

All of our prayers, and thoughts go out to the family. What a terrible thing to happen to one of their children. No matter how it happened, they have to bury their beautiful little girl. She was a first grader, and Mom's, and Dad's make mistakes. We all have. I just hope that they can pull through this..

Happened in my area about10 years ago , boy was 4-5 at the time; lost his leg from kn ee down. The grandfather has a neighboring farm, so I knew the family. Boy is now a fine young man, tall, healthy, with a prosethic (s?).

My heart goes out to them. I have a friend who backed over his son with a mower several years ago. The family still hasn't recovered from the tragedy.
