We've all heard the one armed farmer stories, I live next to a gentleman who went through the horror of getting his shirt sleeve caught hitching a trailer. Tore his arm up enough they had to amputate. Keeps his cover on at all times now. Still farms, just takes his time.

Curious. Why was the pto running while he was hitching up anything let alone a trailer?
Never leave the seat with the pto running!!! Then you wont need a cover.

Exactly! I know of some farmers that tell heir hired help that if the get off the tractor, it had better but shut off also. PTO's are nothing to mess with.

Didn't have the heart to ask him about the circumstances any more than he was willing to offer. As someone who has farmed his whole life, and is now in his mid-70s, I'm sure he knows it was a stupid thing to have done, complacency perhaps.

On mine the cover screws in to the rear housing but wouldn't matter if I had to put two bolts on to secure it, it is be covered when not in use. The second part of that question is "why was the PTO running and why wasn't the cover on, that's why it's there". It isn't for transport, it's to prevent injury.

G,Day donais.
From the safety point of view and especially if there are children about I would spend two minutes and have the safety cover on whenever the pto is not being used and no it is not just a TRANSPORT cover.
Yours for SAFETY ALWAYS .
Hutch.

The cover that he is referring to is a slip on plastic PTO shaft cover that comes with a new Massey, and yes it is only a shaft protector for shipping and assembly. I had plans on slipping my cover in place after using pto driven equipment but I think it got raked into a windrow and turned into hay....I may find it this winter:laughing:
