Maine Members: Source of Diesel?

/ Maine Members: Source of Diesel? #11
I noticed today the Citgo by the Portland Jetport (used to be a Mobil station, adjacent to the Maine Air National Guard) now sells off-road diesel. This is the first place in Maine I've seen it for sale at a gas station, and its in an urban area. Maybe its available at other Citgo stations as well? They seem to be taking over a lot of Mobil locations.

The only difference between off-road diesel and regular diesel is the dye that is put in it so it can be checked by cops to make sure you're not running your truck on it ($30,000 fine).

Isn't there also a difference in allowed sulphur content between on & off-road?

I'm in N.H. and I can't recall seeing it at any Citgo stations here (what few there are). Never really noticed any pattern as to who offers it and who doesn't...even in an area as rural as this, not many stations seem to carry it.

In Brunswick I'm just planning to pull off of my home heating oil tank. I haven't seen anywhere between here and LA that sells off road. I've been reading a lot around TBN about that set up.

Driving to Poland is kind of a hike, not toooo bad but kind of a pain just to fill up a couple of jerry cans.

I think citgo in s Paris has off road diesel.

In Maine, heating oil and off road diesel are very different products.

Off road diesel IS on road diesel, with red dye in it... 15ppm sulfur content...which is why it is now called ULSD - Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel.

Heating oil has a much higher sulfur content...supposedly damaging to diesel engines from 2007 and newer.

In some locations, heating oil has been discontinued, and the substitute is dyed diesel. That is the plan for Maine, as well. It just hasn't happened yet. However, my understanding is, that while burning cleaner, dyed diesel will make our heating oil furnaces less efficient.

1*I don't see how since everything went to ULSD back in 2010.
Has be old stale left over stock if it's still available anywhere.
2*Since 2010 Ultra Low Sulpher Diesel is all that's been produced an anything else must be from out dated stale storage supplies.
3*
4*Not really.
See #2.
5*I don't see how it hasn't happened there cause like I said production was changed to only ULSD way back in 2010.
Maine must still have a lot of the old stale stuff left over from storage.
6*This is first I ever heard that one.

1*You are misinformed, what I said is true, in Maine.
2*see above
3*?
4*see 1, then 2
5*see 1, then 2 and 4
6* You may need to change info sources. Yours aren't accurate. :duh:

HHO *will work fine for a tractor *so that is the best and only way for you to go

If you assume Heating Oil no longer exists... and you convince someone to put it in their ULSD only tractor... You should assume to pay for the damage to their ULSD tractor... caused by the high sulfur heating oil, should such damage occur.

see excerpt below:

United States and Canada

Heating oil is known in the United States as No. 2 heating oil. In the U.S., it must conform to ASTM standard D396. Diesel and kerosene, while often confused as being similar or identical, must conform to their own respective ASTM standards. Heating oil is widely used in parts of the United States and Canada where natural gas is not available and propane is priced higher. Where other fuels are not available, it is sometimes referred to as the unit cost per unit (BTU=British thermal unit or BTUH / h per hour), and can be less than other fuels.
The heating oil futures contract trades in units of 1,000 barrels (160 m3) with a minimum fluctuation of $0.0001 per gallon and (for the USA) is based on delivery in the New York harbor. [4]
Heating oil is mostly used in the northeastern United States, with the majority of that heating oil coming from Irving Oil's refinery located in Saint John, New Brunswick[citation needed]. This refinery also happens to be the largest oil refinery in Canada.
