I have a F2100E with the D950FM engine. Over the winter I am going to remove the engine to replace the clutch.I thought while I had it out I would check the bearings. After looking at the service manual It apears that the only way to check the mains is to completly dissamble the engine. Is this correct. Also on another forum I read there is an upgrade kit for the clutch. Does any one know what this consists of.

Bill are you having problems with the engine. How many hours or does the engine use oil.
And your removing engine to replace clutch after engine is on the work area removing the pan should be able ro look at bottom end of engine. Being careful not to damage remove the bearing bolt of one main and look for scratches or clear wear marks if smooth use Plastic guage material and re install the main bearing to correct tightness . then again remove and with the guage check for wear. if out of tolerance replace the main bearing with new then again check for wear of shaft using plastic guage material this will tell you just now much wear has taken place.
if new bearing is now good go to the next bearing and do same until all mains are checked.
Then same methed for the rod bearings.
With no more knowledge other than what you have written would think unless run out of oil most likly the mains are good.

Why would you consider a problem with main bearings ??
ken covered the procedure for checking them, but unless you have Very low oil pressure on an engine with well over 10k hours, even then, the mains are huge on that engine... KennyV

Thanks kennyV.
Thinking should of mentioned the rear oil seal. this would cause a clutch problem if leaking .
and usually can be replaced with out removing engine.

You CANNOT check the main bearings on a Kubota engine without pulling the crankshaft assembly, which by the way, must come out the back of the block. You can, however check the rod bearings while the engine is still completely assembley by just dropping the oil pan.

Thank you. That is what I thought by reading the service manual. The reason I want to check the bearings is that I just bought this mower a couple of months ago and don't know how well it was maintained. I thought that if it was like a Cat or Cummins I would remove the pan and take off a main just to check it. I will check the rod bearings and if they look good I will put it back together. If they look questionable I will take it apart further.

Main bearings are usually less likely to be a problem compared to the connecting rod bearings. Oil enters the crankshaft through pilot holes at the main bearings then travels down a hole inside the crankshaft to the connecting rod bearings.

Doesn't take long for some one to tell there from the old school of engine repair.

I had completly forgot the inline boring for crank shafts.
Looking for some one to discuss the pouring of babbit bearings on "old" engines.
