ford 1720 4wd engagement lever broke need help

The lever pulls up and goes down like nothing is attached to it,looked under everything is attached and turns shaft going into trans.Can I pull the cover off that the shaft goes through it is held on by 4 bolts,manual does not show that partof transmission or tranfer case.

I have a link below that is real good to give you anatomy of your tractor. I also attached a pdf file. I have taken the cover off on my 1700 for a look and the arrangement of the shifter fork. If you are careful you can get the cover off without damaging the gasket. if you have a bit of tear then you can put some RTV blue when you put it back together. Any pics of the where you have a problem? I think you might have a broken linkage or shifter fork or worn out sliding gear. Opening the top will lead you to proper diagnosis.

First off thanks JC-jetro for the reply,

I took it apart and found that the fwd shift case had a broken stop tab.Which lets the shift pin linkage (which is also worn out) go to far, letting the detent springs and ball fly out into the transmission.So far I found the outer spring,the broken stop tab, and the ball.I am still looking for the inner spring. I ordered the new parts which they have made an upgrade for it which is an external stop plate kit,the new 4wd shift case , a new shift pin/lever, and a gasket for a total of $240.19.
My tractor is an 1988 1720 which the upgraded stop plate came on the 1989 models I think. My tractor did not have part # 38 on the attachment, part 33 had the broken stop tab and part 27 was wore on the shift pin
