After repairing a cracked head and installing a new gasket my 1310 was still losing coolant. Then it got to where it stayed at a level about inch below the filler. Lately it sucked coolant form the home made overflow and stays full.

I assume the head gasket swelled. I feel like it's a brand new tractor... What a life!

(Knock on wood of course!)

did you retorque it after warming?

A head gasket should not swell. They compress when torqued. As Soundguy sugested most head gasket should be retorqued unless the gasket says it isn't necessary. Even though yours has quit leaking I would still retorque it to prevent problems later on.

even the felpro sets I've used that say they don't need retorque.. i do. and have never had a problem doing so...

I would re-torque them unless the bolts are torque to yield!

No I didn't. I may go ahead and do that. I guess it can't hurt. But then again. I hate to mess with it since it's doing better than it ever has since I've owned it.

i've never seen a head gasket START to leak after a retorque.

i have seen them start to leak after not retorquing them though.

your machine.. your call.. etc..

most people overfill radiators.. then after running.. it burps off what is 'above normal' then runs fine from there.

no recovery system right.. just a pressure cap and overflow tube?

most rads are not meant to be fileld to the neck. when it gets hot and expands and circulates.. you usually get a bit pushed out.

ford n's for example.. standard practice is to fill the rad till the core is covered.. not completely filling the top tank.. etc..
