I, too, am curious about the property tax bills that these folks face each year. Many states have some sort of use-value assessment for qualifying agricultural, range, and woodland acreage. Most of the largest landholdings on the list are in range and timber.

My farm is covered by a forestry management plan and I pay about $3/year/acre in property taxes on the covered acreage, and standard rates on the 5-acre homestead (house & outbuildings).

I would be interested in learning what TBN members out West pay in the way of property taxes on their rangeland.

Missourian Leo Drey's L-A-D Foundation is #74 on the list. Drey is quite famous for slowly acquiring forested hilly land and then using select cutting to harvest timber at optimal growth stages without clear cutting. His methods make money and the foundation's 145k acres, called Pioneer Forest, are largely open to the public for hunting and recreation. Besides that land, he also donated a bunch of acres to the state for parks and recreation areas like Hickory Canyon, which holds the state's highest waterfall. Wild elk are being re-introduced to Missouri in an isolated part of Pioneer Forest. What a great guy.

Another notable on the list is #26 Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com, who is building a private spaceport on 290k acres in West Texas (where the word "flat" is defined

The elk are on Peck Ranch which is MDC not LAD.

You are right, thanks for the correction. However, after they are released from the enclosures at Peck Ranch, they are expected to roam a 233,600 acre "restoration zone" of which 62,332 acres (27%) is Pioneer Forest (LAD) land:

I was riding the motorcycle around Peck Ranch Sunday. No elk but saw a couple deer.

Lucky you! Are you planning any elk-friendly land management to lure them out? Supposedly they need some open grazing areas.

I have about a couple acres of grass surrounded by hills, rocks and trees. I didn't let the nighbor lady run her horses on it this year. I noticed many spots
around Peck that had new grazing areas sown.
