My wife learned an important lesson this fall about loaning out her tools. After several months and plenty of opportunities, it never came back. So now we are in the market for a new machine. We were happy with one from Walmart but we were thinking about going with a more profesional model. But we have no idea if they are worth the extra money for the average home-owner use. Any opinions? Brands?

We have a Hoover, and it's only so-so. Did some research, and the Bissel looks like a good one. About $200.

We also have a Hoover. The model we have has 3 tanks. One for supply water, one for the shampoo and the last for collecting the dirty water. We're very happy with it but don't have any experience with other brands/models. The way this model works is, on the fwd motion it dispenses clean water and shampoo. On the back motion it dispenses just clean rinse water. We're always surprised at how dirty the water looks even when the carpet doesn't look all that dirty. We're also please at how good a job it does vac up the water. Carpet is quite dry for just being soaked.

Have had it about 4 yrs, no problems and would recommend a sim model to anyone. Our oldest child and wife's sister have the same model and all are pleased with results. Seem to recall we read comments from owners and don't recall anything negative that stands out.

Rug Doctor from Costco. On sale periodically. I use it almost like a vacuum. We have 4 dogs, eh? Most people tend to use too much shampoo. I do extra rinses until the water is clean. I only focus on the high traffic areas, but I'm way ahead of renting it. Shampoo from Costco, too.

I bought a Hoover Steam Vac from Sears about 9 years ago. At different times, we loaned it to each of our daughters, then last year we loaned it to one of the girls and told her to just keep it, and I bought another new one, almost identical, from Home Depot for $199 plus tax, which is less than I paid at Sears. I'm sure there are commercial units that would be better, but for a homeowner rig, I think it would be hard to beat. I suspect ours is the same as what Mickey has. And I see Home Depot still has the same Hoover that we have now.

Incidentally, I recently knocked over a cup of coffee in the floor of my little Ranger pickup. And this was the first time I'd used the stair/upholstery nozzle and hose. It did such a good job that I just went ahead and cleaned all the carpet in the little truck.:)
