Rifled shot-gun barrel would be my choice. The new guns are a far cry from the old smooth bores and foster slugs. You may want to try the new saboted slugs by Remington,Hornady,Winchester ect.;see what shoots best in your gun.Again the shot gun is the most versatile gun you can own;from mice to moose.I really like my muzzle-loader but a shot-gun is a better all around weapon.

I too am from the no rifle zone in Md and I use a Remington 870 express super magnum. I have a cantilever barrel with a red dot for deer and a long barrel for skeet. No complaints

Can't beat an 870 -- it's really a versatile, time tested shotgun.

Rifle sights, rifled barrel and 12 gauge sabot rounds will allow you to really reach out and touch a deer. Remington or Mossberg, I have both.

I just got a 20g H&R Ultra Slug Hunter for this season and have been practicing with it. I think they are the best "bang for the buck" but it is a single shot so you have to make it count. I can do 10 shots at a sitting and not have a sore shoulder which is nice while I'm learning to shoot it.

Started with an 870 when I was 12 (19 years ago). As I got older and started making more money, I went to an 11-87 with a fully rifled barrels, one catilever and one with rifle sites. Now I use a Benelli SBE II with a fully rifled barrel. The Remingtons got the job done, but I love my Benellis. Smoother action and lighter, but you can buy about six 870's for what one of my Benelli's cost.

It all comes down to what you want to spend and how you intend to use it.

Good advice. I shot my first deer with a 20 gauge double barrel and a "pumpkin ball". Then a model 12 pump. First auto loader at 15 was a mossberg 1000. After that I would never pump a shotgun shell again. My current deer gun is an 11-87 with a cantilevered scope barrel and a luepold shotgun scope. Works perfect. That is its only job now. I have a benelli sbe2 for duck and goose.

Best thing to do is to go put your hands on some and find out which one feels the best to you.

You all have great ideals on slug shotguns. The hot one right now is the Savage 220 /212 with it's great accu-trigger. But you can not change barrels-it is slug forever!! The Rem 870/11-87 and Mossbergs you can put field barrels on them also.
