I don't think the hunter has not done much real hunting nor seen many deer in his life to shoot a small button buck. All the people I know either have a doe tag or go for some real antlers. Some people will shoot anything...

Maybe he doesn't have many teeth left.... and wants something that isn't hard to chew. :)

From the original post I gathered that the deer was shot on property the hunter did not have permission to hunt on. Also, in many states, it is illegal to hunt deer at feeders.

the only thing I gather from the OP is that he is "assuming" he dont have permission to hunt the lot next to him. But he never said one way or the other. Only that the owner is an "absentee owner"

I have a feeder right behind my house that two deer, a button and a little doe, have
been coming to for sometime after their momma got hit by a car. Yesterday I heard two shots that came from the lot
next two ours but was actually almost right behind my house. It was so close it startled me so
I grabbed my orange hat and my .40 and took off to find a neighbor that is not part of our development on the
lot (the lot is owned by an absentee owner.) He came in from the other side and
though he denies it I think he was hunting my feeder, shooting at the deer on their way in.

I am trying to be nice but this AM the little button is missing and while I can't prove
it I think the neighbor likely shot him. I stayed out yesterday looking for the deer with him
and we never found it. He swears it was a good size buck but he couldn't show me for sure where the
deer was standing when it was hit and we never saw any blood/tracks near where it told me it should have been standing.

I am royally pissed at this trespassing neighbor who has made is clear that he doesn't respect property lines.
However I am at a loss at what to do about it. The guy is in is late 20's early 30's and seems a little twitchy
to me if you catch my drift. He won't cross my line (it's well flagged) but until I can buy the lot next to me
I don't know how to keep him on his on place. Any ideas? My Irish kicked in and I am ready to kick arse
but having spent a night in jail I don't really want to go back. Shooting him doesn't seem like a positive
action either.

The feeder is coming down this afternoon. I never thought someone would use it to hunt over like this.
It's literally 20 yards from my office window.

I dont see how you can say he dont respect your property line. Maybe I am just missing something, but the story in my head goes like this:

You own a lot. You have a deer feeder at the back of your lot and enjoy watching a doe and button buck come eat at the feeder. The neighboring lot is owned by someone else who is not around. Someone was hunting THAT lot (maybe with permission??) and shot at a deer ON that property. He never came onto your property and didnt shoot at any deer on your property. But on the neighboring property.

Now assuming it IS legal to hunt with a .30-06 in your area, and he WAS within the allowable distance from dwellings when he shot, and it IS legal to take a button buck, what is the problem? Can you PROVE he broke any laws? Cause your post makes no mention of him breaking any law, yet people are suggesting to call the gamewarden:confused3:

It is just my opinion, but all I can gather from your post is that you like watching these deer, and have done so for awhile now and they are like your pets, but now you fear one may be on someones dinner table. Well, if he didnt go on your property, and he didnt break any laws........

To clarify; the trespasser is hunting on a vacant lot in a development that doesn't allow
hunting or shooting and he definitely doesn't have the owners permission to be on the property.
It is being addressed by our trustees.

I could give a flip that he harvested a deer, in fact I offered to help him locate it and drag it out when he
told me he had shot a big buck. He said he was on his line and that the shots just sounded close.
That's when his story broke down and it was obvious he was lying to me. That's when it changed in my
book, I can't stand liars and thieves. Finding his gun case, shell casings and a camo chair on the lot this afternoon
sealed his fate.

Plus I agree with others in that real hunters don't normally shoot a button.

Here is my thoughts on this. I own several hundred acres divided over 5 parcels. The problem I have with most people are the ones that live on a small city lot.. less than a quarter acre, own a crewcab and a rifle. Numerous times I have had them walk down my driveway and challenge me when I tell them to get off. My property is posted and it is my residence. I can charge them with criminal trespass but I try to be polite.

If you want access you should respect the land owner.

that makes much more sense.

.

So how close to the line and your house was he really?

Hopefully you left them right there and called the game warden?
