Short term I would do well may be a month or 2 tops. After that it would be rough going. So any short term outage / event I would endure just fine. Now if we have a total colapse of society as we know it and you have to start defending your family and property then it would not turn out so well. Society can colapse and the dont haves will try to take from the do haves. Likewise the ill prepared will come for the well prepared. So what are your chances of enduring these situations? Just a thought.
Randell,
We've talked about these scenarios and I think a lot depends on where you live. Grumpy has the same perspective as us, we're old farts too! We live out in the country and even though it's NY State there's a lot to it. The winters here can be a bear, 20 or 30 below although we haven't seen that in a number of years.
I remember Woodstock and all those people stuck on the NY State Thruway. They ran out of gas, food, etc. and never made it up to Woodstock, much less the Western part over a couple more mountains where we live and that was summer. Forget the winter they would make it about 20 miles and it would be over. Even if they made it a little further they would run into suburbs with more people in trouble.
Living in the country is different than living in the city or the 'burbs. People up here all know each other, all have land abutting and have to learn to respect each other or they don't do well. You can live in the 'burbs and not even say hello to your neighbor. Well hopefully people will join hands when the chips are down but all I see is someone selling water on corners for 10 bucks a quart!
The bottom line is population, the less people around, the more land you have, the better off you are. These guys with Hummers and camouflage who think they are going to march up here and survive don't have a clue!
Just take my fruit orchards, they take years to cultivate and to understand, same with the gardens. We get city people buying land up here to show us locals how to make money selling vegetables. That lasts one season and then we see the "for sale" signs go up! It has taken us years to get where we are, understand the land and, to build off grid systems, etc.
We may be dumb hicks but I haven't seen anyone come up here and do it any better regardless how much money they throw into it!
Preparedness takes time and know how that you can't get in a day or a year.
