My main gun for shooting hogs is a Marlin 1894 SS, .44mag. It has a Skinner peep sight and I feel very confident shooting out to 100yds with it. There's a huge difference when shooting a peep sight versus an open sight. The peep sight really concentrates your vision. With most peep sights, you can get different size arpetures (sp?). Find a good balance beween fast aquisition and presision and you'd be good to go.

You get what you pay for

I put one of the Williams sights on the scope mount holes for a 10-22. It was about $40. The adjustment of it was awful. I would not get another of that style; I would really look at the overall build and how it adjusts. The scope mount hole style was fine, but it was the adjustment that was bad.

Okay, peep sights sound promising, especially for the visually impaired. Finding the right one could get tough. I really like the Lyman receiver mount sights. They look very traditional and would look natural on this gun. But, they cost close to $100 and mount to the side of the receiver. The Williams WGRS receiver mount does not appear as well made (but it may be) but it will mount to the top of the receiver in the current scope base holes which would make it very easy to mount. It costs about $40 which is nice but it does not look as traditional as the Lyman. I'll do some more searching.

Rats. That's about the last viable option I can find. Don't mind paying for a good sight but not willing to pay to have receiver drilled and tapped too....unless it is real cheap. Anyone know how much that costs? Anyone know of any other way to get a peep sight on a Mauser? There was one that fit on a Weaver base but don't remember which brand....may have been another Williams.

Have you looked at the MOJO rear aperture sight system?
Mauser 98-actioned Rifles and a Mojo T38 Sight
Never used them, but looks like an interesting setup.

I did see those. But it looks like it fits in the base of the original Mauser 98 tangent sight. My gun has a Mauser action but does not have the military barrel or sights. Interesting looking sight, though.

Doesn't look like they have anything that would work on my rifle. At this point I'll either 1) give up, 2) try the Williams since I wouldn't have a lot to lose ($40) anyway or 3) bite the bullet and get the receiver drilled and tapped for the Lyman.

I might have to shorten the Weaver base but that is no big deal at all. The sight is not cheap though.

I do not see in there, a specification for the height from bore centerline to the sight.

It would generally require matching a front sight to the rear; they have to both be on that same centerline. When I replaced the sights on the 10-22, I had to get the matching front sight(it needed a taller front sight).

That was the beauty of the Redfield, Lyman, and Williams sights specifically for the Mauser; you should not have to change the front sight.
