Car Doc at #422 with "whoever that may be" is the problem I see in a total breakdown. There would be Warlords and if you got in the way, even with a good group of sharpshooters, then it would be the end. For us to survive as a group (presumably a group based on repopulating even if that is not our prime aim) then we have to stay in one place or be nomads with an even bigger chance of being wiped out. That is why I am going the slow breakdown route in my planning.

When I started this thread I was thinking that it may make many at least try to be a little more self sufficient ,I have to admit there are a few things I will have to rethink myself ! MORE GUNS AND AMMO and I thought I had plenty ! and more land even further out than I had originally planned with no paved road leading the less prepared to my stock and supplies And I'm sure some will say You can't do it with out a group ,well to that I just have say Bull--it ! I'm just not the sitting around the fire singing KUMBAYA type and I have to think I'm not the only one that thinks this way .While inviting the less prepared into "your "group is admirable to Me it just seems a way for the "save me " crowd to keep doing what they already were to take care of themselves NOTHING ! Now there are things some will need to barter with and some will have to have outside contact and I am interested in what some of "you" think those items might be ?:anyone:

TP, any high proof drink, ammo, food, meds and or a service like pulling teeth or sewing up a wound. Salt, and Oil would be a big thing. Oil meaning veggy oil. I planted 18 hazelnut bushes last year (and I have a small oil press) so that we could press oil. The oil could be used for light, for cooking, and you could run it in your chain saw if needed as bar oil. (some people do this but have mushroom spore in there to innoculate stumps.)

once things calm down, probably housewares, spoons , brooms, bowls, rugs, baskets, leather, etc.

One think I keep forgeting about is entertainment. In our kit we have a couple packs of cards, chess, checkers, and a few other games.

As far as survival I think a 22 lr is more practical for those on a fixed budget. I have high velocity rifles but ammo is exspensive. For practicality I'd take a 22 less noise, so not everyone knows your location, and deadly for deer in a given range.

Jesse, You are right in my opinion...22 LR - hollow point especially is the choice of assassins...low noise , high accuracy...head shots, throat and heart shots are always lethal...Very wise choice...inexpensive ! I sure don't want to be shot by a 22 LR hollow point...Imagine how many more rounds you can stock pile vs. the higher caliber rounds...

hmmm .. hazelnut bushes .. what an excellent idea!

in our last really bad ice storm in Tulsa, OK ... power was out for 2 1/2 weeks, kinda of a warning of what can happen. since I had several Honda gensets and I heat with wood. our house went right on functioning. helps that there's three freezers full of meat with about another 60 days supply of dry goods. only thing lacking was a large supply of water. my buddy's swimming pool closeby was the best candidate.

plenty of reloading supplies on hand to last a lifetime. with lead casting equipment + 100+lb of lead wheel weights for a backup.

You are right that there is an almost total lack of outline plans on the thread. Mine will follow in a separate post, but first, how far out do you think you can go and still set up a home with everything you already have stockpiled, plus everything else you intend to stockpile? Remember you need to transfer everything to the place and will need to produce food on this land too.

I have never sung Kumbaya, so totally agree with you on that point, BUT (a big BUT) how many years do you have left when you will still be fit and active? What happens if you or your wife becomes ill? I have never seen anyone over about 85 who can put in a decent day's work, and most are dead before then. If you are way out on your own, with whom are you going to barter? Are they likely to be carrying anything worthwhile? Are you going to let them get close enough to begin a conversation with you? Next, and again I have previously asked generally, when do you begin to buy the land, build a home, buy the extra guns, and how much are you prepared to spend. Do you and your wife have sufficient of the right skills to replace your clothing (you could stockpile 20 years' worth of course) hand tools and equipment?

I have asked generally on the thread and nobody has answered, so I guess that none of the posters have ever been totally cut-off from the outside world before. Can the women folk take that even if the men can? Apart from myself, my wife sees another human being only every two months or so, and has lived that way for a long time. I am sure she could go much longer without any problems. With the exception of a trip back to Scotland for our son's wedding in 2010 she has not been further away from the property than the town 10 miles away since 2004.
