The term redneck (in the states) was derived from union miners vs coal mine owners is WV...back in the day owners sent thugs to bust unions in WV...union members/supporters wore red bandanas around their necks to distinctly mark themselves...the union busting attempt eventually led to a shooting "war" in southern WV...BTW the "war" included ariel bombing and machine guns ! The union busting attempt eventually failed...and the " rednecks" won !

For reference see The Battle of Blair Mountain...the "war" was actually called "The Redneck War" by some writers...makes for an interesting bit o history !

I suggest you "educate" yourself beyond the hellhole in which you are probably doomed to live out the rest of your uninformed life...

You dont know me, we've never met, you have no clue as to my level of education, and your remarks were and are unwarranted....I did not say anything about an accepted defination nor did I make reference to education...the events I described happened and are historical fact...if you're so educated ( I mean you use such BIG words) feel free to let your fingers do the walking, Google would be a fine starting point...

In short, you're an *** and that's all I have to say about that.

I'm glad someone knows the history of the term; however, the pride associated with the term, now days, is not indicative of the original meaning. A redneck began as a mark of pride for a hardworking, low paid miner; A mark of a man who was fighting for his rights. It infuriates me, when it is used to depict beer drinking, lazy heckraisers. I'm not trying to upset anyone. My grandfather tied a red sock around his neck during the uprising in Logan, WV. This is why I am touchy with the term. He had no education and couldn't even sign his name. The situation didn't allow anyone the opportunity for an education. He helped change that problem in this region. I am working on a second master's degree and I feel like the true rednecks helped allot me the opportunity. I can't change the world's definition of redneck, but I certainly won't accept it as a reference for defining myself. What once was a true American term for a man fighting for his rights, has become a derogatory term. If you chose to accept a condescending term as reference to yourself, that is your choice.

personally your comment comes across as someone that is quite limited in "education" formal or otherwise...so "speak on oh toothless one"...

The term originally applied to immigrant workers that spent their days working in the sun, particularly those that were picking crops etc. that exposed the nape of their necks...these days it is mostly meant to define anyone that is capable of using/utilizing whatever they have "on hand" to accomplish something...so how "educated" are you? and how do you use it?...my guess would be that it is as someone that holds the role as some sort of a teacher/instructor etc...i.e., someone that could not cut it in the real world...I pity anyone that deems you as a role model or mentor...

My personal observation is that some of the most highly (formally) educated individuals are some of the stupidest people on the planet...with the limited number of posts you have here so far puts you into that category...prove me wrong...so far accusing those that accept the connotation...I find quite intelligent...

I'm not here to argue or base intelligence off of post counts. Your history and definition of redneck is incorrect. I can't find one positive definition for redneck. Let's not dispute over it. I have come off too strong. My original comment about lacking education was intended in good humor. I guess I need to go back and add a little face.

I also had relatives/ancestors in the conflict...mainly cousins and uncles (great great ? uncles) father's side of the family are all from Cabell and Wayne counties...

To answer your question after sifting thru all the nonsense. The word "redneck" was coined from the working class farmers who where not vain about thier looks.. They wore longs sleeved shirts during the day and even wore caps or straw hats to protect themselves from the sun. Over the years a farmer would develope a well defined tan from the neck up. Thus the term ""redneck" or "redneck dirt farmer" redneck farmer" This term "redneck" has been made fun of, abused and misused. But the above is how the term was coined.
