Just saw this and didn't know if it was discussed here.....I understand company policy, but I have issues with them to fire the employee for his bravery......You be the judge....:confused3:

"Zero tolerance" results in a lot of bad decisions everywhere.

The chain outfits don't allow any independent thought for local managers, they aren't interested in common sense applied to the moment whether its a holdup or scheduling an extra dumpster pickup. That's a big problem in many of these situations. If you think about it, it says AutoZone is more interested in legal CYA than the safety of its employees.

If the police think the robber is responsible for many other hold-ups (30-40), then there must be a string of dead bodies if the statement that the employee saved the manager's live is true. Of course he didn't know that at the time, so I think that part is immaterial to judging his actions, but it is speculation for an intended agenda.

He should not have been fired, but at 23 years old, he learned a valuable lesson about who not to work for.

Agree zero tolerance means they restrict themselves from making decisions based on actual circumstances. I have zero tolerance for that! Agree to boycott Autozone and I also sent them a message via their "contact us" form. Others should do the same so they get the message that a large percentage of their customer base thinks this is unjust.

That is ridiculous, I shop there all of the time but not anymore.

It seems they have a very strict firing policy. You know the little fuel injector bottles or bulb grease packets that they always try to get you buy at the counter... I once asked the employee if they get good commission for that because they are quite persistent sometimes, he stated that they get some kind of "point" (or whatever they were called) for selling them and if they don't make the quota they get terminated. I don't know if he was lying to get me to sympathetically buy them, but either way it didn't work... but I did feel a little bad.
