Outdoor Temperature Sensor

We have a LaCrosse unit that has been working about 5 or 6 years. Changed the outdoor batteries once when it went kind of wacko, but that didn't fix the problem. It did start working correctly a day or 2 later.

BTW, the unit only updates wind speeds about once every minute and a half, which is worthless.

If you buy a weather station, check the wind reporting frequency before you buy.

Weather stations need to be located properly to be very accurate. That means in an open grassy field, away from any obstacles that could block the wind and any shade or heat sources. Example: When we had a heat pump installed, the unit came with a temp sensor so it would switch to propane if it got too cold to be efficient (and it reports the temp on the thermostat in the house). The tech checked it with a remote infra-red thermometer. Since I had a cheapie unit from Harbor Freight, I checked it against his and it was spot on. But they both differed a lot from my weather station. So I take my HF unit out to the weather station and checked it & it agreed with the weather station at that location. The heat pump is on the south side of the garage on concrete, the weather station is in the middle of a grassy field & they often read as much as 15 degrees different. Right now, on rainy, solid overcast and windy day 20 minutes before sunset they are within 4 deg. C.

We used to have a Bios model from Home Hardware, I finally got tired of swapping batteries in the POS, and got a basic LaCrosse (under $10 on sale) Works like a charm so far.

If you want to upgrade, another vote for Davis.

I have a Vantage pro2. Its been excellent. Solar powered for the sensors (battery for night), also available hard wired.

Might be a bit overkill if all you want is temperature, but they do have cheaper units (like the weather wizzard) that are quite a bit cheaper. And Davis is Made in the USA too.

I've only had my Ambient WS-2080 for a week now and have my eye on a Davis in the future. Question for all you WS (weather station) owners; do you all post your data to wunderground.com, weatherbug, and or others? Anyone running a web page?

I post to WU and have a station page there.
But in order to post with a Davis, you need to buy the Data Logger, its around $130, however some dealers include it in a package deal for quite a bit less.

it must be the brand opf sensor your using. I have the La Crosse temp/humidity sensor at home. WS-9023U-IT by La Crosse Technology - Tomorrow's Weather Today and it has an additional sensor in my wifes greenhouse 120 feet away. The thermometer records inside air temp, outside air temp/humidity AND the greenhouse temp towards the top of greenhouse and at ground level. My batteries are over 2 years old, and have never been changed.

I have a couple different remote thermometers. Regular AA batteries last a couple yrs in my remotes. The Skyscan however, doesn't keep time well at all. Finally the display gave out altogether, so my wife bought a new clock to take it's place. Brand new clock didn't work, so she returned it to wallyworld and got a different brand of clock. It doesn't work either.

Or is there some other wireless temperature station that works better?

I use lithium batteries in my La Crosse and they last 3+ years.
