Criminals aren't known to be the sharpest knife in the drawer!
I am surprised no one has commented on this yet:
“He pulled a gun from his waist band and demanded me and my manager go back into the office,” McLean told Fox News.
At some point, McLean was left in a restroom while the gunman made the manager open the store safe. That’s when McLean, a 23-year-old Air Force veteran, bolted through a side door and ran to his truck.
He returned through the front door holding a Glock 40 – pointed directly at the masked robber."
What sort of holdup artist leaves one person in the restroom?
.... It's easy to say 'just give them the money, it's not worth your life', but there's no guarantee that they'll stop at just the money. Every situation is going to be different, and there is no way for anyone to know what may have happened if McClean did not scare off the robber.....

I can think of three incidents within 3 miles of where I live where a robber was given the money and shot someone anyway. One was a doughnut shop. The elderly lady that worked there was shot and killed after giving the robber the money. The second was at a gas station. The cashier turned over the cash and was shot and wounded. The third was a pizza delivery guy was robbed at gunpoint. He turned over the cash. He was made to lay face down on the ground and then he was shot in the back. Thankfully his injuries were non-life threatening. None of the victims offered any resistance yet they were all shot.
I think we can argue the should/shouldn't argument until we are blue in the face and not come to resolution. The known facts are that Mr. McLean got his weapon and the armed robber took off running. He brought the situation to a resolution in a very quick manner. That's what happened, right or wrong. Then, because of corporate policy, Autozone fired him. I think we are almost 100% unanimous in saying we disagree with this action. If they had given him a punitive week or two weeks off, I would not be happy with them, but not nearly as upset as I am for termination with no recourse. I hope somebody in the corporation with power has enough sense to overturn some HR automatron's knee-jerk reaction.
well said:thumbsup:
I can't think of a single instance locally where the person being robbed pulled a gun and still got shot. There was an instance many years ago where the robber got shot and wounded.Ok, but how many went the other way. I think your odds are better to comply, the odds are stacked in his favour. At least until he makes a fatal mistake like leaving an ex-soldier in the bathroom by himself.

Let's hope Mr. McLean finds a job with a decent employer. Count me among those that won't be going to Auto Zone.
