White Tail Deer - Fact or fiction???

A buck is broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hips, much like a well built young man, a doe is just the opposite narrow at the shoulders and wide at the hips, much like a well built young woman, a bucks rear hoof prints will usually be slightly inward from his front hoof track, been putting hounds on deer down here in the south for a pretty good many years and this is one fairly reliable way to determine between a buck and a doe. The difference is Buck poop tends to hand together in a nice turd made up of the pellets we all are familiar with. Doe poop is usually the individual
pellets much like a sheep or goat.

Know your species by their feces. The best presentation I gave while taking a wildlife biology class many years ago. Even the crusty old prof had to chuckle when the title slide came up.

I've seen both types of deer scat and always assumed the clumped sort was a buck.

Rick- I let the dogs do the tasting, they think doe scat is woods candy laid out especially for them.

Dave,

That is exactly the "rumor" or "old wives tale" I'm trying to prove/disprove...

Biologically I can see no reason for there to be a difference, therefore it is either a behavioral difference, or a situational difference, or ???

I was hoping someone really knows the answer...

This is what I've heard, and I've seen the difference with my own eyes, but the truth is, I didn't see it come out of the deers rear, so I can't say its fact.

I usually do not see the deer doing their business but I do witness their pooing from time to time. I guess next time I will pay more attention to the clumpiness of their scat.:laughing::laughing: Having read this scatological tail, err, I mean tale, most deer scat I see is the pellet variety which would lend credence to the poo being excreted by does since I mostly see females :deer: in our yard. I guess I will have to take a walk to where I think the bucks :moose: hang out and see if I can find some clumpy poo to practice my coprology.:laughing::laughing:

Later,
Dan

Being as I am a low down dastardly fellow, I prefer to sneak up on deer and shoot them in their beds. That means they usually have full colons and every year we get @8 deer. Only a handful of those have been does and I don't usually mess with the colon or its contents other than to slide it out but some feces will slide out of the **** from time to time and I have seen both loose and clumpy in bucks. I always thought it was diet but will have to pay closer attention from now on.

I think the scat depends on what was eaten and not the sex of the deer. If it were not the case...wouldn't cow flap or goat pellets be different between the sexes...especially since they eat the same things from the same fields, etc?

Lineman...I will certainly be watching the rear tracks more closely. I never knew that and will do more investigating, now. That's very interesting.
