What tractor do I need?

   / What tractor do I need? #11
I bought a 5045d earlier this year for similar purposes... not a lot of bells and whistles, just a really good, solid tractor. Mine has a 512 loader that works great. Post back if you have questions about the 5045d.

We have about the same size property and initially used it as hunting land before clearing land for the farm and house. Our new Holland TN60 has been great. Not terribly expensive with a FEL either.

Nothing it really can't run that I have run into with it. Even pulls a 9ft haybine. It gets a little bogged down in real thick grass but that's why we have the 806 now. We have pulled a disk with it, brush hogged, etc. And you can get a very nice sized woods backhoe for it.

How is the 2WD with the loader? Did you add fluid to the tires? I really like the 5045d, and I'd like to get 2WD if possible (one less thing to break). I also wonder if I would regret not going one step up to the 5055d. Decisions, decisions.

4WD is a must have with a loader. You will find that there are alot of places you will need it to back up or even go forward at times.

How can it be a must when so many people apparently have 2wd's with loaders? At some point, there has to enough lbs. and HP to overcome the need for 4wd, right? I've kind of come to the conclusion that 4wd is only a necessity for tractors that have no business with FEL's in the first place, no?

No.

There are many ways to get things done...each takes a different amount of effort on the operator's part, and time, and money.
Only you can determine how you want to balance these off.
I had 2wd tractors and spun wheels often until I got a 4wd.
I got along without a FEL until I had one...then improvements moved ahead at least 5 times faster and half of the things I do now were simply impossible (oh, well, a shovel full at a time) before.
The advice and recommendations you will get here comes from folks who have had numerous tractors before, done many if not all of the things you will be doing, tried many different approaches, and are giving you their best judgement for your needs.

:welcome:

Since you are new...I suggest you use the TBN thread search feature....you will find MANY threads which cover the tasks, equipment, functions and features you have questions about...now and in the future. It is very educational and time saving to read thru these threads.

Look at it this way. You take a tractor no loader and 2wd it will go fine. Then you put a loader on the front at 1300lbs plus a bucket and quick attach, for a total of 1700lbs. It now how your weight distribution to the front of the tractor and even with a ballast on the rear you will be surprised at how poorly it goes especially in reverse without anything in the bucket.

When you are in 4WD you have four wheel brakes.
Put a loader on a 2WD fill the bucket with dirt. Now go downhill and try to stop. It's even more fun when it's muddy. Not saying it can't be done. I've owned two 2WD tractors w/loaders and a 2WD TLB. I got the job done, but 4WD is so much safer.

And if you have never operated a tractor before: 2WD+FEL+ undulations/loose or uneven ground (like around ponds ) = potential disaster for a novice
Just try braking in certain circumstances on an incorrectly ballasted 2WD heading downhill with a full bucket &/or the FEL raised - on a 2WD drive & brakes only activate on the now lightly loaded rear end, could make for an interesting "freewheel" to the bottom if you get it wrong..........4WD makes for a whole lot overall safer tractor experience.....

I've been happy with it. Debated 4wd a long time, but decided against it for your reason plus wanted more maneuverability. Our area is flat and generally loamy soil, and my tractor doesnt make me a living so I can choose to do something else when it's too soggy out. I can also renta larger 4wd if needed for a particular job. But for day-to-day (or more accurately weekend-to-weekend) chores, my 2wd is more than sufficient on my property and handles the FEL well with good rear ballast (often my disk or bushhog).
