Gas Generator to House AC connection???

A friend that owns a generator repair & sales shop told me recently, other than engine problems (mostly fuel/carb related) the most common way to cook your generator is to back feed and have too much left on, then the generator guts go "BYE-BYE".....:thumbdown:

Then he gets to sell a brand new generator and the electrician gets his share of the money for transfer switch hook-up.....:2cents::2cents::2cents:......:cool2:

this setup will only power a certain amount of circuits..... 6 - 8 depending on unit selected.

work great with 5 - 7.5 kw generators as they dont have the power to supply a whole house anyways.

I want to [and do] energize the whole house. I selectively turn off loads when needed. ... This circuit limitation on some conversion types is the reason I havnt jumped in. I have a safe backfeed setup, but I dont want anyone else to be starting it up. Understanding the arrangement is necessary.

Does that do the whole house panel or just selected circuits? I didnt see how the interlock is applied. :confused2:

Selected circuits.....6 @ 120vac (or 4 @ 120 vac w/ 1 @ 240vac).......each leg has individual meter to witness power draw while gen running

each breaker has a switch just above....... generator/off/line

no interlock on existing panel

When I installed mine they only offered a 6 breaker setup......I was told the larger ones with 10 didn't satisfy the local elec codes

They changed it and had I waited I could have put in a 10 circuit unit, that way when going to bed I could shut off the well water pump (220vac) and turn on the hot water to let it charge up......(that unit has two 220vac circuit breakers)

But, hind sight is 20-20........:ashamed:

Having the good guys to help get power up and running is more important than playing with generators anyways....:drink:

This thead has gone every which way. Im a firm beliver in doing things the right way. Im sure all of you gen and line men are sick of answering questions about genny hook up but here is one more if you will entertain it.
I have a home built in 86. I have two pannels one inside for lights ect and one outside for all my major stuff well, AC, 60amo breaker that feeds the inside pannel.

Without having a true main 100 amp breaker disconect how can I safely wire up a transfer pannel ect. I would like to feed the whole pannel but I would be fine with just running frigs the well and maybe a few lights.
I have not found a transfer that other have spoke about that goes between the pannel and the meter.

there are two pto gens im considering 7800kw and a 14kw.
