Dang, did you even read the press release? The engines are all-new and expect to lead the class in HP and torque. The 4.3L is completely new, an aluminum block and everything. It will even drop down to 4-cylinders using AFM. I bet the 6 is over 300 HP and probably more like 320 if you consider the HP of the smaller Camaro V6.

Why so much hate on the 5.3? Mine was super-reliable and I never heard one whisper (beyond the internet) of problems. Everybody who I know owns one had nothing but great service and luck. I'm betting that when you see the new HP ratings it will be close to 400 hp(380+) and torque around 400 lb-ft of torque. Probably just under 400 if they want to compete with the EB.

I looked at those steps when I bought my Ford....look nice but I bet they don't hold up over time. Plus it kinda takes away some of the utility of the tail-gate. I'm betting the step-bumper is much more useful in the real world. Of course, if you just pick-up groceries and the occassional sheet of plywood (like about 85% of truck buyers) I think the "man step" is a great idea. I would have to see the step-tailgate in person before wanting one though.

Also I noticed that chevy is finally offering the 6.5' box. Probably the #1 reason why I bought the ford. That and the room in the crew cab.

Last time I checked GM is the only truck MFR that offered a diesel in a REAL 1/2 ton pick-up from 1982-1999. I don't think any of the Big 4 (or 5 including Nissan) are going to do it though.

yes, I read the press release. I am the one that passed it along after reading it. You have to understand something about GM. to them "all-new" doesn't always mean just that. sometimes it just means "hey we finally got off our lazy butts and decided to update our old technology. hope this gets us by for another 5-7 years!" My family has been GM owners for YEARS, my lifetime actually. back then you could have a truck run it's cycle for 10 years without doing hardly anything to it because the competition wasn't coming out with something new and better every 2-3 years. now, if you keep that same mindset you're going to get killed which is exactly what's happening. did ANYONE on this board ever think DODGE out of all people would have a better interior and up their reliability? I sure didn't and would have laughed at you if you'd told me that back in 2004 when I was driving my first Z71.

yay, GM FINALLY made a crew cab with a 6.5' bed. how many years has Ford and dodge been doing it? I'm sorry but this is a HUGE fail on GM's part with this truck. I wasn't expecting them to take over the world but for crying out loud, I want my tax dollars back if this is what they went for.

I have a budy that bought a 10 chevy used. He just had it at GM dealer and engine was rebuilt... why cause his 5.3 AFM has seised rings and was burning oil like crazy. he pulled a trailer with his 30ish HP kubota trailer to his moms. Its like 20 miles and burned a qt or qt and a half of oil going there!!!

My brother had a 2010 Chevy 5.3 with AFM that he towed his boat with every weekend and never had a problem with anything. He traded the x-cab Chevy for a standard cab 2012 GMC 5.3...

There's an awful lot of hostility towards a truck no one here has seen in person or driven.

Guess the Dodge 5.7 (GM has used that size for 50 years) or the 5.0 Ford (Ford has used that forever too) must be junk and outdated since the litre designation is the same....Geez.

I'll know how I feel about it once I see one in person and drive one.

In my opinion the 5.3 WAS a good engine until GM started slapping all this stupid stuff like AFM on it and putting in car-like gears. I know they are trying to achieve fuel numbers but at least offer us the option of something lower then a freaking 3:42 rear end and don't make us have to buy some top of the line package to get it. I was kind of hoping GM would offer the 5.7 again, go back to their roots like Ford and Dodge did, but nope. I was also hoping to see stuff that Ford and Dodge didn't have, not "upgrade"(if that's what you want to call it) to be almost neck and neck with them. This truck was supposed to SURPASS them, in my opinion it barely equals them. I think they made huge leaps and bounds in the interior, however it's still not up to par with the top trim levels from Dodge and ford. I don't need to go drive a Prius to know I wouldn't want one, and I won't go drive this new truck from GM because it's too close to what they already have. I hated my 2011, except for the 6.2 but they've even gone and screwed with that now. I was expecting groundbreaking and all I see is a truck that MAY BE competitive for 2-3 years until Ford, Dodge, and Toyota decide to leave them in the dust....again. then it'll be another 7 years before they try to equal them again. I'm really starting to believe they don't want to overtake Ford for the top spot, they are quite content with 2nd place....and that's slipping away because Dodge is pushing hard for it.

Some of you are missing the point with the DIRECT INJECTION and the 11 to 1 mechanical compression/expansion ratio on regular gas.
The variable valve timing is a simple method to match valve timing with rpms. No EGR valve either.
Why change the shortblock, they were proven and bullet proof. Save some development money.
What advances are there left to make on the body and frame? They have been as light, strong and aerodynamic as possible for the past 13 years with conventional cost effective materials. Nothing to change in transmissions either.

My father owned GM products since the '30s. I owned them all my life. GM (and Chrysler) are dead to me.

well even if they do plan on bringing a diesel I can PROMISE you they will do it AFTER Ford and Dodge do it and have been doing it for a few years. then GM will be running around screaming "all-new! all-new!". uh, no, all-new means you came up with an idea that no one else had, it doesn't mean you dressed up your outdated truck and still lag behind the rest because your "todays" technology is your competitions "yesterdays" technology. this is most of the reason GM lost me as a lifelong loyal customer recently.

The only reason there are European light diesel vehicles is government meddling. If diesel was taxed and priced the same as gasoline. The diesel market would collapse over night.

The rear gears are so much taller because the new transmissions have so much more gear in them. A 3.42 gear with the new 6at trans has a lower first gear than the 4L60e did with 4.10's.

You are getting your cake and eating it too. You can't base anything off just the rear gear ratio. The new transmissions have a much greater ratio spread while minimizing rom drop on shifts. It's all about torque multiplication.

I know what you are trying to say, but the new engines don't share shortblocks with any of the old engines. They are effectively clean sheet.
