I would like to build a man lift/elevator with a 1000lbs capacity. I have been looking for a used palette lift but haven't seen one locally for over a year. Shipping is cost prohibitive. The attic opening is 4x6' and the total lift height needs to be 9' The platform should also fold to save space when not in use. I was thinking of hydraulic or worm gear type or even a winch with pulleys. Open to suggestions! What size/type and thickness of steel should I use? Thanks Eric

Maybe a car lift could be adapted to meet your needs?

Man Lift for 1,000 pounds.

you must be putting on a little weight. Maybe even go on a diet.
Try Nutra System. :D:)

May not be 1K lbs but 1/4 way there...

Need the capacity to store implements and other man stuff

Thanks for the links and ideas so far!

Reason I was contemplating a worm gear/threaded shaft setup is to have built in safety. Let go of the switch and the load would not move as opposed to a winch where a failure would be disastrous.

Not sure where in Ontario you are located, but I would ask your local forklift repair places and scrapyards to keep an eye out for you. I might also place a wanted ad on Craigslist.
If you are coming down to the Rochester/Syracuse area (or wont be doing this project will spring and could meet in the Gan/Kingston area), I know where a 120v hydraulic pump out of a trash compactor (setup with limit switches to stop at both ends of travel) could be found.
Otherwise, I would look into a hoist such as 1,320 lb Electric Cable Hoist | Princess Auto with a separate mechanical interlock so that you dont fall far if the cable breaks.

Aaron Z;

Prob won't be heading down to Rochester anytime soon but could take you up on the spring Gan thing. Will PM you.

As for the hoist...I own one already and am using it as a hoist to unload things from truck bed

I would be careful about relying on a worm driven threaded rod being safe I use that system on a number of timber packet lifts. Square threads running through brass nuts every now and then the thread wears out the whole lot comes down with a **** of a bang. I you use an old fork host mast you need to install a flow restrictor directly into the bottom port of the cylinder before any hoses that way a blown hose or valve malfunction will give you a slow descent
