Don't walk...Run like H*** ! Furthermore report your experience to the BBB, give an online negative rating, and notify Honda corp in writing about the dissatisfaction with their dealer !

I've had a 6500W Honda generator since 1999 and it has been flawless. But, it's possible other brands have improved their quality considerably since then and I would have to research all over again if I were to buy a new generator. At the time, Honda gens were known for actually being able to produce their rated power, and do it with clean output.

A good Honda dealer has equipment to put a gen on a test load and measure it's true output. Good luck on that with big box set at a third of the price, you just have to have faith that it can do what is advertised.

I would look for reliability and actual power production. If a lower cost set fails while you need it, and when else would it fail? :p, that isn't much of a savings. I really wonder if Hondas are still worth the premium?

sell me yours!!!:p:p kidding of course...

I don't know enough about the power production side to make a reliable decision...yet!! In time I hope to learn more, but the power outages around here are becoming more frequent and with longer outage times so I'm under the gun so to speak.

The Honda puts out 45 amps/54 amps peak
The Generac 5802 42 amps with brushes
The Generac 5747 33 amps brushless
and no mention of the max amp for either Generac. Of course I could calculate it by doing the math.

Based on what I've learned so far I'd go with the 5802.
You guys are great and I'm leaning to go back to a Generac based on what you all have said, but I'm still hung up on that stupid Honda lol...no doubt it won't be from that dealer though.

Keep the comments coming because it's all food for thought and I'm starving right now!!:D

The attorney general may be interested in this issue. Over the years, a fair amount of attention has been given to the sale of equipment, supplies or the like after a natural "disaster"- when it appears that customers are being duped.

Not suggesting a definitive motive on the dealers side but, how many other customers are in the same situation you are? IMHO- it would be better to have it investigated and the FACTS proven one way or another than to potentially let them "get away" with something.

Regardless, I would agree with others that being a customer of this dealer isn't the best idea.

Wow, bad deal for you all the way around!! I agree run, even if it's a good deal, businesses like this one, will do this until the "suckers" are gone.

As far as Honda, I think they have the best small engines on the planet, we have them on all our industrial painters, they last. I'd go somewhere else, or start a "fund" in a coffee can and pay into that at 0% interest until I had enough to shop where I wanted.

Yes, that is the insidious power of marketing and image. You have to put the baseless emotions aside and be hard-nosed in these things.

Write down two prices: the Honda price and the next choice price. Stare at it. Think about payments to be made. Stare some more.
There, now I have deprogrammed you.

Find another dealer and/or generator brand.

I don't know how important a dealer is to buy a portable generator. Seems like there are quite a few places selling parts and service all over the place. If the dealer WAS important, said dealer has shown their true colors and I would be out of there. Since the dealer has appeared to have lied several times, I would be out of there.

Can you take your Avatar to the dealer and see if they will honor the contract? ;):laughing::laughing:

Later,

yes signed and dated by both parties so I imagine I could get it enforced, but at what cost? A coworker suggested I contact the local TV news people but honestly I don't want the attention it would likely bring. Then there's the warranty side of this...if I make waves to get the deal honored and need warranty work beyond my own capabilities, then what?

Don't know about costs. Does your state allow you to recover legal expenses? You could seek give minutes of free telephone consultation to find out. But for all the other reasons that have been brought up, you probably don't want to do business with them anyway.

I'm betting he could file in small claims court for next to nothing and include his added cost for filing in his suit, if you go to this point though, I would do as another already posted and make a call to a local media outlet, may be others in the same boat or even the tip of an ice-burg so to speak. To me, to go to this extreme would be based solely on the "principal" of the whole thing, which is a decent reason.

Businesses and people that operate this way should be called out on it.
