Weather report. How cold?

FYI brining is a waste of money. They are hauling a load that is more then half water when mother nature will deliver all the water you need in the form of ice or snow so each truck load only goes half as far as it could if loaded with dry rock salt. . Your DOT has bought a load of snake oil from the salesmen that sell the brine pumps and equipment and the only reason they haven't got caught at it is that your average snow ice event is usually fallowed by a spell of warmer weather that takes care of the problem.

+100 on what you just said !

We've had several major pileups on 400 series highways here (Ontario, Canada, 4xx are our Interstates) lately. Last one east of Toronto yesterday - real doozey. These type of major crashes do happen every season, but this hasn't been that bad of a winter.

Just a guess, I suspect one other attraction for the brine is less service. Easier to change pumps, nozzles, and lines than deal with svc. on the mechanical conveyors for rock salt. Cheaper for the road maintaining contractor, and until they get hit with a class action suit, you crashing is not their problem.

Well, I could be a prick and thumb my nose at you all WAY up north... but I used to live in Canada & know (as you do) what real cold is. Mind you, we were used to it and/or expected it back then. It's the middle of summer down here in Australia = where the North is hot and the South is a lot cooler (after Tasmania there's Antarctica). Anyway, it was a max of 27C today with some blessed rain. I believe that it's going down to 12C tonight. A lovely 21C tomorrow.

Stay safe Cobbers.

Funny tho, a few Canucks I've known have lived in NZ and Oz. A common experience was that they had never been colder, Indoors ! In NZ, it seemed there was little/no central heating. With infrequent cold, people often got by with portable electric space heaters. Getting up with the house at 50F happened, and you just plugged in a heater to deal with it. As you know, 50F here in the morning and people are speed dialing their furnace repair guy.

A college buddy has been living in Oz for quite a while. Reno'd a few houses down under - said there was typically little/nothing for insulation in place. Not sure how widespread that is, but sure sounds drafty to me, and can't be helping on the AC bill in the hot season !

We were at -30C the other morning, Tues. High is forecast at +12C !

Stay well down your way.

One of the most miserable cold memory for me is being in Florida during a cold snap. No insulation, tiny furnace, and no warm clothes.

The men and women driving the plows and plowing the snow are not the problem. They all know that salt or even just sand works better then brine. It is the higher ups that have bought the bill of goods and are looking for a promotion based on their "innovation and leadership" Now a contractor being paid on a cost plus basis would be all for brine as it will take twice as long to get a road bare dry and safe. look to your mid level management for the mistake and to the clueless top department heads for not stopping the stupidity.
