I stopped by my Deere dealer tonight to pick up some break in oil... all they had was Break In Plus 10w30. In I asked about it's use in a diesel engine all the parts guys stratched there heads and said "I wouldn't put that in a diesel... that's for gasoline engines". Even the service tech hadn't heard of a break in oil for diesels. They did some digging around on the Deere site and found some info stating that all diesels... even Tier 4 engines... came with a factory fill of Break In Plus 10w30. This does not sound right to me, so I didn't get any. If that's all that Deere has, I will source another brand.

What's the issue? IS the oil is API rated? The letter "S" followed by another letter (for example, SM) refers to oil suitable for gasoline engines. The letter "C" followed by another letter and/or number (for example, CI-4) refers to oil suitable for diesel engines. These letters officially stand for "Service" and "Commercial."

That is what Deere recommends for proper break-in... what don't you like about it?

I think all break-in oils are non-detergent compared to diesel oils that are super high detergent to keep carbon deposits down. When I changed the oil in my LS P7010 at 50 hour, it looked like new oil, clear as vegetable oil. Put in Shell T6 Rotella and 20 hours later it was black like most diesel oils look.
By the way, why do you need break in oil. Did your tractor use oil during the 50 hour break-in period?

Sorry, forgot to mention that this is for a fresh rebuild.

I would just use a multi-grade non-detergent motor oil for break-in period then switch back to your standard oil that you use for diesels. Depending on what you did, you may not need break in. If it has new rings, honed cylinders, new rod bearings then put in some ND oil and run it for 30-50 hours then go back to the standard that you normally use.

What am I missing?....Why not use what JD reccomends..and what JD puts in every engine that leaves the factory?

Ok... just use what Deere recommends. The "assumption" that a non-detergent oil will be sufficient for the break-in period is not wrong, necessarily. It will certainly do the job. Deere may have added some other additives to their break-in oil but apparently they did not "build up" the oil to the same level as the commercial brands.

You should be able to order it - if the dealer doesn't have it on the shelf.

Simple enough..

Deere doesn't pay licensing fees to the API so none of their engine oils are API rated.
API service classifications are 'S' for Spark ignition and 'C' for Compression ignition.
