I have a co-worker with a 2006 Dmax that is a 3/4 ton. We noticed a cooler a little bit forward of the rear wheel well just inside the drivers frame rail. What is this cooler for?

Fuel cooler.

diesel fuel is best utilized when it is cool, though not cold. the injection system pressurizes it to a real high pressure, and because of this it heats up. the fuel system circulates far more than you actually burn and the cooler is in the return line, so the excess fuel that has been heated up returns through the cooler and is cooled before being returned to the tank. ironically, there is also a heater in the fuel filter housing to prevent gelling. over my time working on mine, i also noticed that if you trace the fuel lines after the filter they appear to go through some sort of module in the fuel injection system. i don't know for certain, but i'd speculate that the fuel is actually used as a coolant for the electronics, similar to water cooling in a computer. i doubt that this adds any significant temperature increase to the fuel though.

i'm not an expert on these diesels, but i've learned far more than i wanted to from owning an early duramax.

When I first saw the cooler, I thought the only thing that made sense because of the location was for the fuel. I know on drag race cars you will see people with cool cans, which runs the fuel line through a can packed with ice. So cool fuel is better. I own a Cummins and it also has a heater for the fuel in the fuel filter bowl. I'd just never heard of a fuel cooler, but it makes sense, its too small for anything else.

The the way the ecm works on cat dozer! It has fuel that runs through it to keep it cool!

The P/S 7.3's have a heater in the fuel filer bowl also. CJ
