I found it, or what appears to be something with similar markings. I can't really tell from the photo it could be what used to be the North American Natrix (sp), but they changed the name somewhere along the way (DNR). It is a common water snake here that looks a lot like a copperhead. The difference is that the water snake is aggressive whereas the copperhead generally is not. How large was the specimen in your photo? It appears to be about 2 feet or so from what I can tell.

I figured it would be coiled up ready to strike. I still can't tell which end is which.

I see the snake and his head is pointing to the left. I also see a healthy poison oak seedling. Does that give me a bigger prize?

Oh yes! I see it, took me about 30 seconds , But I've seen many in real life in our woods, usually they are not still when I notice them, They scent me coming and trying to get away and hide, the most stubborn snake I have encountered is a Water Moccasin, They'll come after you and try getting in your boat, Once while entering a cove on our jet-ski I notice one just about 2 ft from shoreline, we wanted to beach the ski so I kinda aimed a rooster tail in his direction, Oops! the chase was on Him chasing me that is:eek: it took me 10 minutes to ware that thing down enough that he finally moved along, Good thing for me I wasn't in a paddle boat, :D

I see him, his head is pointed to the lower right and it is not a copperhead like any Texas ones I have seen and I have seen hundreds. Copperheads down here are browner and while they do not chase you they do not retreat. they hold their ground and strike when you wonder too near. Each year the local paper list several bites. I've had a friend a cousin and an uncle get bit. They all survived but relay painful swelling stories.

Edit: I found the original picture and picked it right out. He is not where I thought he was in the above picture. The colors must be a tad off, I usually spot them quickly.
