Wade he is dead on when he tell's you that the more hp will not increase preasure just volume. his explanation and opnion of what to try sounds to me like he knows what he's talking about. i learned this years ago and hit basically the same as he is telling you, i wanted to reduce water at a building in town and i thought i could turn the valve half way shut a nd reduce preasure WRONG all it did was reduce the volume of water with same preasure. thats when got educated on preasure reducing valves. i would go to hard ware ask them to exchange pump if they say no i would go to another hardware and get what i needed and let the well guy know that you have a pump for sale if he needs one. good luck

You always want to match the pump to the well, I doubt the store will swap it out, You could keep it in case you ever drill a new well, or you can sell it. Never listen to the guy at the store, your not the first one to make that mistake, the well guy sized the pump he put in for a reason.

The part about adding the 12 feet back into the line makes sense to me. I think I'd do that first. Then I'd try restricting the flow to a rate the well could handle. It seems to me that a valve between the tank and all the spigots would allow it to be tuned to whatever rate was necessary.

Makes perfect sense. The 12 ft will give you more reservoir. (4" well is 3/4 gal per ft) The pump gpm must be below the well gpm or you empty the well. Maybe Ebay or CL for the old pump. If you have 6 gpm, you'll have plenty of water. Tap uses like 2.5 gpm.

Well, expensive lesson learned. But - I have done simalar thing to you - not a well but something else and I bought things based on hardware recommendation and it was wrong. I really wanted my money back so - I would raise a fuss and a fit until a manager was called over and instead of exchange - I got a full refund. Apparently they dont like customers in their store owing fits when they made a mistake. Either way - with my money back , I had the option of going somewhere else and buy the right part or just stand there and use it for the right part. I chose to go somewhere else as embarrassment was enough for both of us . lol! I am not saying go back and throw a fit - but get the manager and explained you bought things under THEIR recommendation and you finally got a right info that conflicted with theirs .... why do you think they will do?

Pressure is built by the number of stages in the pump. Volume is controlled by the diameter of the stages. As the number of stages and their diameter increase so do the HP. requirements.

You can reduce the produced volume of an existing well with a outlet restricting orifice.

Drilling holes in the stators will also decrease the flow volume and allow gases thru when pump is idle. This method may be used in gaseous wells. It usually requires experience with the area and how the pumps work.:D

I did ask the guy about a restrictor. he advised against saying that it would put "back load" on the pump and may cause damage over time. Thoughts?

Wade at this point so far the well guy is making good sence ,and remember he does this kinda work every day and besides your self he is the only one who has litterally seen the set up. if it were me i would follow his advice.

Buy the new pump through the driller - he should be the one to get any profit on it. I've a friend who is a driller and he often talks about getting below the crease where the water is coming in. Could the higher position be just above that or the "pool" and adding 10 or12 feet would put the new pump in a better position.

Thanks . I was just mentioning what he said about the restrictor valve. Trust me I am not going to do anything that he did not recommend. I am sick of pulling this thing.
