Anybody going to tell us why a lower volume pump will give him more water. Cuz it wont.
Well....pun intended
Haven't you ever heard the expression: "Less is more"?
Yea......less is more.......
I don't know what it means either, but........ there's another thread idea!

Pls see my post above. Its the least expensive way to surely help the situation. A restrictor will offer no help you couldnt accomplish by just running your faucets slower.

,,, Im guessing you have a 3gpm well. You will only get that delivery from a pump position at the bottom. 25 feet up from there and you can probably only draw 1GPM continuously. And 60' up you can get essentially zero. Your pump is probably 10 GPM. From the bottom it will pump your 60' full wellcase dry in around 10 minutes [however its pumping rate does decrease as the water drops because it is pumping a higher net water column/more pressure]. But 10gpm is huge. You never really need to use water that fast for long do you? A toilet running will run my well "dry" but we have no trouble watering 20 horses and two families. We do see milky water occasionaly tho.

Taps work well as adjustable flow restrictions.
We have some agreement. ... More than this actually.

I realize this post does not help the OP's situation, but in following this thread the last few days, I realize how fortunate I am...
we have a dug well, only 22 feet deep. we've been here for 28 years, over that time I've checked the water level out of curiosity, usually I've got 12 feet of water (water level is 10ft below ground level), no idea how far off the bottom the foot valve is.
Two years ago we got a swimming pool for the grandkids... the INTEX type, 16ft across, 42 inches deep.
I fill it from the garden hose... takes about 18 hours. Of course I monitored the well... at most, the water level dropped about 3 feet over the 18 hours. We have a 1/2 HP shallow-well pump in the basement, changed it out once since we've been here, maybe 12 years ago.
It truly is a blessing to not have to worry about water supply.

,,, blackrat , how big is your tank?

I thought the idea is that a lower volume pump would not out-strip the inflow/recharge to the well. No, it's not more water, it should be more consistent water at the user end of things.

 Agree fully. Not more water but properly sized pump won't pump the well "dry" within a few min. Not as hard on the pump IMO.

Pressure is built by the number of stages in the pump. Volume is controlled by the diameter of the stages. As the number of stages and their diameter increase so do the HP. requirements.

You can reduce the produced volume of an existing well with a outlet restricting orifice.

Drilling holes in the stators will also decrease the flow volume and allow gases thru when pump is idle. This method may be used in gaseous wells. It usually requires experience with the area and how the pumps work.:D

Yep. I disagree with what the well guy said. The tank does NOT "build pressure", the pump does that. The tank, in general, STORES pressure so the pump doesn't have to run full time. More a matter of semantics but I don't like experts putting out wrong information.

What is the maximum head the pump can produce? Is it possible, since the well is so deep, as the water level goes down the pump doesn't have enough head pressure to push the water to the house.

Just for reference, we have a 1\2 horse pump with a similar head load as yours. Has absolutely no problem keeping up with the demand.

Disregard this. I totally missed the total depth of the well.

Hi all. here is where I am. The hardware\plumbing store called Myers and Myers will not accept the pump under warranty. The store will not exchange and deny that they recommended it. At this point I am tired of arguing. I bought a new Giant Genie 3/4HP 6gpm yesterday for $300. I will be installing it this afternoon. If I am lucky I can sale the other pump on CL and recoup some money. if not then I will always have one for the next well.

One more question before I get started. I have a 20g tanks and a 30/50 switch. Once I kill the power to the pump and pull it out to replace, do I need to change the tank air pressure? If so, before or after I turn the pump back on?

If you have a 30/50 switch which is what I recommend, Turn the pump off and you should be able to drain the water out of the tank it self, ( Should be a gate or a ball valve on the line connected to the tank ) Open the valve and let it drain till nothing else comes out if you don't have one at the tank just open up the lowest closet faucet, Once there is no more pressure I would use a good quialty air gauge the pencil type are not that accurate, Set the tank air pressure to 28 PSI. Once every thing is hooked back up turn the well on and make sure it stops at 50, then turn a faucet or something on and see that the well kicks on at 30, If they are off much you can fine tune them with the nuts under the switch cap. Google it and it will show which one does what, then check it again just like I told you to for the intial check.
