5 Speeds on the M and H about 16-17 MPH

When I was a kid, my father towed our Farmall H with his pickup and lucky me at the wheel. He was in a bit of a hurry - let me just say that loaded tires at high speed will bounce off the ground and scare the &^%% out of you! I was lucky to survive that experience.

I can sure identify with that. My Dad towed our 1940 John Deere L into town behind a pickup with me at the wheel of the tractor when I about 12 years old. When we went from our dirt road onto the pavement at an angle and over a hump, I got one of the worst scares of my life because that old tractor's steering was well worn and had a lot of "play" in it and it tended to wander all over the road.

My MX 5100 does 19 mph. That is too fast for me.

With a higher top speed I would worry about stopping.

TC34DA HST top speed is a little over 12mph. Like most tractors, it has the power to go faster but not the gearing.

My L5740 is 18 mph on average. I've hit 21 mph going down hill though.

Forward Reverse
Low Range 4.1 mph 4.1 mph
Med Range 7.7 7.7
High Range 16.4 13.1

HehHeh! I'll guarantee you that my Uncle's Farmall `M' went over 20 mph......`course my cousins were pretty good with a wrench,and they probably had it tuned up quite a bit. LOL! There's no way a man,unless a sprinter, could've run with this thing. I was pretty fast at 14 yrs.old and I couldn't have caught it,no way.don-ohio ^)

We used to tie a piece of baling twine to the mechanical governor arm of our farmall B. That thing would fly when you pulled the string and over revved the engine. Then daddy found out..... That was the end of that foolishness!
