About to start some controversy and a little off topic discussion in this thread (Sorry 2Lane)

Best actor in westerns:

John Wayne vs. Robert Duvall vs. Clint Eastwood.

Who ya got?

I know this is heresy, but I'm leaning to Duvall based on Open Range and Broken Trail, both of which were fantastic performances. Bonus points for playing Gus in the Lonesome Dove series.

Open Range.

Bob Duvall is untouchable, probably Costner's best movie ever and who among us didn't think Annette Bening's character wasn't as hot as a firecracker!:D

Angel and the Badman is a Classic; always loved it. Yeah, 10 is too short. I agree with an earlier poster that Treasure of the Sierra Madre is not technically a Western, and Jeremiah Johnson probably isn't either, but they are close. As for the best actor? I think that John Wayne's performance in "The Shootist" was his best ever; much more deserving of an Oscar than True Grit. The Duke got away with playing himself in all of his movies; his long career and many roles jelled in his last, "The Shootist". I place it up there with "Shane", another of the best of the best. Oh, yeah, "Dances with Wolves" wasn't bad either.

I thought "High Noon" was a bit too melodramatic, and a bit on the unbelieveable side.
