There is another American hero from Texas who also made some good movies. Audie Murphy like John Wayne played the person he was. Destry, Night Passage and No Name on the Bullet are 3 that come to mind.
Although To **** and Back will always be one of my most memorable.

Audie Murphy as compared to John Wayne is no comparison. Audie Murphy earned his heroism the hard way. John Wayne was a actor. Never did anything heroic, only presented in hero parts. John Wayne exploited the Indians and used them as vile characters to push forward the American dream of western conquest.
Several books about John Wayne push the effort of Movie Studios and Directors in trying to keep him out of the war effort. He did have slight back problems and kids and was older than most draftees. But others older, with more pressing conditions joined and served.
All in all I still like John Wayne movies and the comination with John Ford (director) can't be beat.
