How do you store you logging/tow chain?

/ How do you store you logging/tow chain? #61
Well, DON'T leave one on the floor / floorboards. Especially don't if you're running the brush hog. Not even just for a little bit. ALSO, DON'T ask me how I came by this tidbit of knowledge!
NOW, I use old ammo cans, attached to various points on my skidding winch or tractor. If you QA have a loader, sometimes there's a "slot" between the loader frame and the loader frame that bolts to the tractor. It works well to get some flat stock, about 8" long x 5" wide (whatever will slide into the loader frame opening), and weld a platform (to bolt an ammo can onto) at 90 degrees on one end. Slide the piece into the slot and you have a 'shelf' to bolt an ammo can to . Sorry no pics...

I'm afraid I just toss it in the FEL bucket along with the chainsaw, gas can, wedges, axe, and toolbox.

IMAG0384.jpgmany guys use ammo boxes. cheap and easy, plus they are water tight. I used a standard 5.56 can and that fits my one chain plus a little room for some pins and stuff.

I also learned this trick here on TBN. Four inch dia. PVC bolted to the loader arm supports. I have chain in the left one and rope in the right one. Drain holes in the bottom.

I want to see if I can make this work on my B3300SU with 504FEL. I bought materials today.

I've got a two inch hitch ball bolted to my drawbar which I loop the chain around while pulling. When not in use, I loop it around the lower 3pt arms which have Pats Quick Hitch terminations and form a nice slot for chain. It is rare that I have need of a chain with implements attached and never with rotating machinery on the PTO.

I like to have my chain with me at all times but haven't found a good place to put it on my tractor. How do you deal with this? Thanks.
Since more than half my chain usage is with my truck I stow my chains in plastic containers. I've about 14 of the Harbor Freight and Home depot 15' and 20' chains. My son had been eating

which holds 2 each 15' chains. I also like Hellman's Mayonnaise

1 gallon jugs.

The plastic doesn't rattle or scratch.

not sure- but are you describing rhino-chain storage 001.JPG something like this?
This tractor was missing the cross brace when I got it so when I fabbed up a cross support, cut the box in half (to fit). then drilled and tapped some mounting holes in the cross brace and bolted it all together, works well for chains, and I even leave them in there when mowing with the brush hog :)

Because of this forum I came up with my version of some one else's great idea. The upright for the loader assembly has holes in it at the bottom. I used six inch PVC thick wall pipe with a slip end cap, glued on of course. The cap has a drain hole in the bottom I drilled. Two large bolts go through the loader frame into two holes I drilled in the six inch pipe. At the top I fabricated a brace bracket out of flat stock. I am really pleased with it.

On my NH TC40DA, there is quite a large flat spot on the center of the floor in front of the seat. Being hydrostatic, I have no shift lever to worry about. So I built a wood box with the sides hanging down over the hump on the floor to keep it in place side to side so it doesn't bounce off (Unless I hit a really bad hole, then it my go ajar a bit.) I have a cab so I left the top open. If your shifter is in the front center of your floor, you would have to make it small enough to clear the shifter and keep it from sliding forward with a standoff of some type.

I like to have my chain with me at all times but haven't found a good place to put it on my tractor. How do you deal with this? Thanks.

Wow 7 pages of posts on how to store chains. Talk about NOT wanting to recreate the wheel here and use a few of these myself.

And the best thing is no politics and only a slight visit by the safety police.

In the corner of my barn.LOL

In a bucket 3/4 filled with old oil in the barn. I hook the hooks on the edges of the bucket.

I use an inexpensive plastic tool box and keep it on the frame of my back blade with a bungee cord. Meets my needs and cheap!

On the tractor, in this box. I carry a 16' 3/8" chain, a 16' 5/16" chain, a 10' 5/16" chain and a 8' 5/16" chain.

I found that if I cut out the middle part, in the front of an old antifreeze jug, I can carry the chain by the handle of the jug. Usually I just hook one end over the edge of the cut plastic. They store nice and don't rust whatever they are sitting on. It always amazes me, well actually pisses me off, that sometimes things meant for one time use are of better quality then something purpose built, new. Ever try and bust a two litre pop container?

I've used antifreeze jugs to hold chains in the bed of my truck for years... large cube shaped laundry detergent jugs work great, dont fall over like antifreeze jugs. After a few years they get brittle and break... I need some new ones, now that I think about it.

Probably not worth the trouble, but if you paint it black inside and out, I bet they would last a lot longer... Ultraviolet light breaks down the polymer chains of the plastic.

Good idea... but with 5 kids under age 13 and one on the way, I have a lifetime supply of laundry deterg jugs... *grin*
