And on a sidenote, if the picture is actually real, supposedly taken during the "standoff" per which this thread is about in NY, I would be utterly embarassed, humiliated and feel like a horses butt to be these men in uniform in the picture.

And we're supposed to feel safe when it's idiots who are getting paid to "protect" us and they are supposed to be the only law abiding people who can own "black guns"?

As I think about the death penalty a number of questions come up. Why do we execute a person? If we execute a person just kill him because he did something bad, then it is revenge. Revenge is wrong, an eye for an eye…soon we are all blind and toothless.

Execution as a deterrent serves a purpose…to be a deterrent they must be public. Hiding them in a small room somewhere reduces it again to revenge; all it does is render the person dead. March every kid in trouble with the law into the room and make them watch it, and an execution becomes a deterrent, a body hanging from a tree outside of town was a deterrent, a strong deterrent.

Loren49’s comparison of the US’s incarceration rate to other countries seems a bit lacking. The political prisoners in China are still prisoners. But more important what is a prison in China like compared to one here in the states, “three hot’s and a cot”.

When a person is told “No, you should not do that.” but sees that little is done to those that do it he sees that it is OK. Nothing happened to them so nothing will happen to me.

If a person is put in prison to pay their debt to society make them work, and work hard. A five year old seeing a road gang in a ditch will learn that the bad guys do get punished.

My daughter and I live in south FL we do not use the AC or heat, we save our money. People lived a long time before AC was invented, why prisoners should be coddled?

When my son was 9, my daughter was in the hospital. There was a young girl on the same floor; someone had slipped some LSD in her soda at a church social. She had flashbacks and would start screaming and go completely hysterical. They used huge leather straps on her to keep her in the bed. When my son came to visit with his dad I took him for a walk, I wanted him to see what drugs do to a person. As luck would have it she had a flashback just as we passed the room. We watched. As we walked back to the room he said, "You did that on purpose didn't you. I told him, "Yes, now you have seen what drugs can do. I cannot stay with you every minute of your life I hope that will help you make the right decision." He did.

I was a tough mother; I am proud of my kids. What we need now is a tough government, so we can be proud of our country.

The answer is "we execute people to give the public the perception that justice is being done."

FWIW, I am not saying that this is a valid reason, or that it is efficacious.

Retribution is as valid a reason as any.

I have spoken with a lot of families of murder victims and for quite a few the execution brings about a sense of closure as well as justice. I am not a strong proponent of the death penalty, but if the person's guilt is absolutely unquestionable I lose no sleep over it.

I am bothered by cases such as the one we had in Missouri on Joshua Kezer who was not only found by a judge to be not guilty, but to be innocent which is rare after he spent fourteen years in prison and could easily have been given the death penalty.

Tom;
Ask yourself are the rights described in the "Bill of Rights" individual rights or rights of the state?

Then ask yourself am I willing to undergo an annual screening that could restrict my first amendment rights? My fourth amendment rights?

Legislators clearly understand gun laws and the passing of new laws affect only those who abide by the law..or "Law Abiding Citizens". In most cases they are knee-jerk reactions to appease the public at large and stem from some current crisis.... Their sole purpose is to show they're working in the best interest of their constituents....

You know, that's just sad.... I looked up images of those scopes and sure enough, it looks like its backwards, and then, in the images, there's that same picture and links to many others that noticed the same thing....

SWAT officer attracts ridicule after he¿s pictured with his rifle sight on backwards | Mail Online

A quote from the article...

"The officer is using a 'military style' assault weapon with a close quarters combat sight that costs roughly $500.

'It's disturbing to think that 1) none of his buddies corrected it, and 2) he's in a real-life situation with his optic on backwards, which means he's never fired that rifle with the optic on it, which means it isn't zeroed and he thought it was OK to show up to a gunfight with an unzeroed weapon,' wrote one Reddituser. ...Why do we execute a person?...

Because they have committed an offense so heinous as to have surrendered their expectation to live in a civilized society.
Murder is an obvious such case. I submit that rape should also mandate capital punishment.

Some argue that capital punishment is not a deterrent. I beg to differ. The person executed will not re-offend.

On the issue of firearms, it should be understood that liberty and freedom do pose certain risks. This is the price of living with freedom.

The right to bear arms is specifically intended to provide the people with the ability to resist/overthrow the government. Therefore, it makes no sense to allow that government to list or regulate those arms. This is like having the fox guarding the chickens. Rest assured, a government that fears private ownership of firearms is hopelessly corrupt and will eventually see the people disarmed.

Given the free exercise of liberty and rights comes with some expectations and obligations, the people should see that abuses of these rights are not without cost.

I'm not Tom, but the answer is, the rights set forth in the Bill of Rights are first and foremost individual rights. I'm not sure what the "annual screening" is that you refer to, but "restricting" or infringing on our Constitutional rights is not, and should not be taken lightly. Not to say that some restriction is not Constitutional, but our rights of necessity must be balanced against the rights of others and the interest of the government.
