I just bought a 4600 that has the standard AG tires. After a few runs around the property, I am thinking a set of turf tires might be a good call. Anyone recommend keeping another set of rims/tires handy for swapping back and forth? Or do the turf tires handle well enough with a fel installed? I am planning to move a decent amount of dirt and also use the tractor to bush hog. If anyone has a good source for good used tires/rims please let me know. Thanks in advance

I bought my 4300 used with turf tires. I thought that I would hate the turf tires and would want R4's. now two years later hundreds of yards of dirt and a hundred ton of gravel later, I love my turf tires. Plenty of traction except on mud. I do keep a set of tire chains. But only use them for snow.

I have turfs and really like them for all but wet packed snow. The turfs are better in mud and snow / ice than r4s in my opinion (tryed them) and the ags tear finished areas up too much. You can always get chains for ice or wet snow and to help in mud too.

I swap between turf and Ags and find this works very well. The turfs work fine all summer, mowing, loader work etc. They are not very good in wet weather on grass or mud but having said that, who works in the rain! I change to the Ags in the fall for the snow work.

It is interesting to note that when I'm grooming the riding ring (sand sawdust mix) with the turfs I don't have to use 4wd. With the Ags it slips enough that I use 4wd. I guess the turfs put more rubber on the ground for traction when in loose material.

If you're in flat dry (or well drained) terrain, turfs should work ok. I however, do not enjoy such terrain. Doesn't snow much here. When it does, soft turf and mud typically follow. The one and only tractor I had with R3s (turf) had to get pulled out of trouble one too many times. In the normal scheme of things, a tractor should pull a truck out of the mud - not the other way around. Subsequently had four consecutive tractors on R1s; good in the field, good in the mud, hard on turf, rough ride on hard surfaces. Current tractor is on R4s; good in the field, not so good in mud, not nearly as hard on turf, much better on hard surface. So it's a matter of how you use the tractor - and where - that determines the best tire type to wear.
