Ram 2500 water in fuel?

It's hard to hear anything in the cab with the truck dinging at me, but if I stand near the driver side rear wheel well, I can hear a whirring that I assume is the lift pump.

Whirring noise is good! Id spend the cash and get a set of high quality batteries, I think I spent $350-$400 on a set.

Last night, the battery wouldn't turn the starter after two or three attempts to start the truck. This morning, after about 12 hours on the trickle charger, it was back in "float" mode. That alone is very suspicious, since these two batteries should take a lot longer than that to go from dead to full. But anyway. Truck wouldn't start. Jumped it off my car, this time while revving the car's engine a bit, and it started right up. I'm going to swap the batteries today. No matter what else might be wrong, the batteries are definitely toast.

Both batteries have a sticker on them that says March 2, 2012, which is just a few months before we bought the truck, in May. Still, there's no mistaking a dead battery, and this is definitely that.

The batteries SHOULD still be good, but you never know. I have a 2004 and I still have the original batteries, so they should last you at least a few years. The 3rd gen Cummins are known to have wiring problems that throw all sorts of codes, and it indicates bad batteries or wiring. Usually some kind of ground problem or there is some other wiring that is a common problem. The Cummins forums would be a better source of what wiring is the common problem.

Could also be an altenator.

Could also be a starter.

I agree with a lot of what you said. Load testing the batteries should have been the initial step here. Easy and cheap possibly free way to eliminate a lot of questions and wasted time.

I did load test the batteries, thank you. They tested good.

Did you clean and check all battery connections - including grounds ?
Your ECM is receiving intermittant voltage for some reason !!!!
Putting new batteries in will eliminate the battery question and may actually help with the electrical connections question.
You really do need to do something or you will be in the same situation two weeks from now!

Well that's good load test good and volts are good. Now you don't have to buy new ones. Time to clean terminals and get the meter out.

So let me ask an indelicate question: why did the dealer say I had water in the fuel and propose between $700 and $4700 in repairs? I realize that you're not psychic, and I won't hold you to your answer. It sure seems to me like, "water in fuel" vs "no water in fuel" is pretty cut-and-dried, but maybe it isn't. Maybe one sample can have water and another sample won't.

Look -- if a dealer gives you a line like water in the fuel -I'd bee asking how did they confirm it. If you get a diverting answer or something similar, its time to get THEM looked into by going over thier head. Just like you confirmed - you can do your own test for water and its reliable -no reason why they can't show you too. I dont trust dealers like that .

It seems to be a common thing at dealers and diesel trucks. The problem is always water in the fuel. Bad injectors, its not our fault, you got water in the fuel. Truck won't start, must be water in the fuel.
