Hello, have some questions on some painting
projects I would like some input on.

First, have a metal machine ahead to paint.
it was put up in the mid 70's and is starting
to show some age.
the lumberyard says a latex with oil in
It, the other, an ace hardware store using
their equalivant of rustolum. I do not
have rust.

The other project is a wooden barn....I am
Not going to guess when it was painted
Last, there is no paint and it is weathered
wood. Again, lumberyard pushing latex (on everything)......the hardware store says oil,
which I orginaly thought. Yes the wood will
Drink it.

Also have house and outbuildings was thinking of
The new all in one lifetime paint.

Lastly I'm not good with ladders anymore,
And the building sides are 14 foot and barn
Is 16 foot and almost 30 at peak.
has anyone used spraypaint poles? I see Hyde
Tools makes a couple of them
thank you

I used to work as a painter when I was in school, and while I was pretty good with a brush, I was not a consumate professional. If I were you, I would go to a PROFESSIONAL paint store, i.e. one that sells to professional painters. They usually have unbelieveable expertise... someone like Lowes or Walmart will not usually have this expertise. A professional can not only advise, but can mix special blends if necessary. Chances are the folks at hardware stores and lumberyards can handle the average homeowner, but it's not where I would go for advice.

I agree with 2LC, go to your nearest Sherwin Williams for some ideas ,dont have to buy, but they know paints and make great products. I bet they will have the best option for paint on old wood too.

For the machine, I'd look at some kind of enamel (solvent based)

The paint for the house sounds good

The barn, I would go the cheapest route if the wood looks to need replaced in a few years.

Never used a paint pole, outr n\machines have 50' hoses, so.... You may can rent one, or a genie with a 40' boom would make it real easy (rented of course)

BTW Rustoluem is not just for rusty surfaces, it is also a preventive. Surface prep can determine how much life you get out of any quality paint.

I've had great results on using Rustoleum on a rusting galvanized tin roof. I used oil-based solid stain on my barn and got good coverage on rough bare wood using a thick nap roller forpainting most of it and a brush for the tight spots.

Boiled linseed oil is expensive, but would work great on your old barn too.

put steel siding on the wood barn
when I was younger I helped my dad prime and paint a 150x80 pole barn that had good wood
within 2 years after scraping priming and painting we were looking at doing it over again (on south and west walls) and decided on steel siding
now this was back in the late 70s so materials are better today but the only thing they paid dad for was for the costs of primer and paint
we were out of the 100 hrs or so for labor
barn today still looks like new
