Wow, that's reassuring to read, thanks. I guess I came in here a little bit like a know-it-all so I apologize if I did. I'm very familiar with diesels and have dealt with bad IP's, pumps, air leaks, glowplug issues, hard starts, bad injectors, blown head gaskets and all the usual stuff. I guess this just feels different, hard to explain, but maybe I've just psyched myself out and need to open my mind to the possibility it's something simple.

Basically it only starts now with the throttle to the floor and will die immediately if I come off the throttle. Once it warms up (like completely), it runs ok at idle other than the blowby and some light knocking but I know I'm not doing it any favors by hitting it with crazy RPM's for 5+ straight minutes trying to warm it up. It does this thing where I give it fuel, it surges to life, I come off the throttle, it almost dies, I hit it with fuel..... etc for 5-10 minutes with it needing to be restarted 5-10 times along the way.

The blowby is pretty bad, the blowby tube has physical oil dripping out, as well as oil mist and exhaust vapors and everywhere I go now I leave a trail of oil drops (planning to rig a bottle under it to catch the oil). There's not oil at the exhaust pipe though, no. And as much as it's dripping oil, it's really not losing all that much in the big picture. Maybe a quart every 10 hours, something like that.

There's no visible signs of a head gasket failure but I will clean it up and look closer. That would be great news as that's something I'm familiar with and comfortable doing myself. I always try to DIY when possible.

The coolant's good, full and tests normal.

Thanks for the in-depth break down, it's much appreciated.

Anyone know if Kioti needs a special compression tester adapter or if one of the common sizes will fit? I know someone that has the cheapo Harbor Freight one I could borrow. Any chance that would do the trick?

I tend to lose objectivity when I have serious issues. I have operated diesels for almost 40 years. It really helps me to bounce my issues off others who are objective before I tear an engine apart.

I see your issues as minor, combustion head gasket errosion into oil return to pan. To major, cracked block beyond repair. Fuel issue would not give you blow by or white smoke. Compression test is where I would start. As it is and with a little oil in cylinders. I would go each step down leading to engine repacement, hoping I found the issue before then.

Do a search and find contact info for Michigan Iron and Wallas. They are Kioti/Bob Cat dealers who have helped a lot of people on here. A while back I think I saw a Texas dealer on ebay having DK engines for sale in the $7-8.000 dollar range.

Worst case, Part it out on ebay and other sites. Good luck and keep us posted.

As far as a compression adaptor. I had a gas engine a while back that I could not find an adaptor for. I ended up breaking the porcelyn out of a spark plug and welding an adaptor to it for a compression test. I think injector tips are around $50 for these engines. Cheap when looking at $7-8,000.

I agree with those who caution not to assume that you need a new or rebuilt engine. Take it one step at a time until you have an actual diagnosis based on tests performed. Otherwise you're gonna bark up the wrong tree and waste time/$$$.
I'd start at the simplest approach and drop the oil/filter and see what you find. Measure the quantity and see if the engine has more oil/? than max qty. Smell for fuel, look for metal particles and run a magnet through the oil to see what it picks up. You may find what you think is oil burning is actually fuel diluting your oil, possibly as a result of there being no filter in the bowl. The no fuel filter could have rendered the IP to junk status or severely jammed up and unable to properly deliver atomized fuel to the engine. How long was this no filter thing happening, BTW?
Did you install a fuel filter after buying the tractor?

I'd stop trying to get it to run for now, and concentrate on diagnosing the problem(s) and then correcting them one by one. This situation is NOT going to fix itself by running the engine the way you describe.
Post back your findings.
You can do a compression test, but I'd start at the beginning and work up to teardown as needed once the basics are verified and eliminated.

If it were me, I would quit trying to run it like Coyote said. I have done many repairs on bigger diesels and nothing good comes from running a diesel with bad blowby. Especially if it is getting progressivly worse. On a non sleeved engine running it to failure most of the time results in a bore job along with the new internals. It sounds like the fuel system is still functioning but with no filter I would have it gone through. Look at it this way, when you do a complete rebuild and if it is done right it will last thousands of hours and you KNOW what you have. CJ

At this time you can buy a brand new DK40 engine with warranty from Kioti for between $3600 and $4600 depending on serial numbers etc.

You'll just have to try it and see. My Harbor Freight Diesel compression tester kit included adapters that fit both the injector holes and glow plug holes in my iron head Mercedes 300SD. Maybe you'll get lucky; Kioti's Doowan injection system was licensed from Zexel, formerly Bosch, so maybe it's a common size.
