I looked at those on amazon. Went with an earthway chest spreader. Got it today in fact. The one you got looks really nice.

Oh, good review too.

Hi Roger,

That "commercial" moniker is a tough thing for me. I would say it is well built and should last me a lifetime, but I do not think I would call it commercial. I guess I think of commercial as something that would hold up to a lawn service crew using and abusing it. Not sure if it would take throwing around or abuse, but possibly. It is built in the US, which I like, and uses a metal control rod (no cables). The wheels are plastic to prevent rusting. There is an agitator, which is just a spring clip, but seems to work well. There are still quite a few parts that are plastic, but I guess that is to prevent rust. They do make this model with a stainless steel frame also, but that is probably overkill. Something else will break or wear out before the frame, but it does look nice. :2cents: The hopper size I think is perfect as any bigger would get too heavy to push up hill. It pushes and works nice. I think the $168 price was a fair value. Here are some pictures. Let me know if you want pictures of anything else and/ or a copy of the manual. The reviews on Amazon say it is a pain to put together, but it wasn't bad at all.

Thanks for posting the pictures. I looked at Home Depot today and your spreader looks 100 times better than the scotts professional spreader. I also think a 50lb hopper is the right size.

I spent part of yesterday (friday) spreading pettetized lime on some horse paddocks. I was using a 3 pt broadcast
cone spreader and the width is yoadjustable. You can spread to the left or to the right or both ways at once. Depends on how you open the gates..There is an agitor you can use with powdered lime with it. Ordered separately.

How narrow will it spread?

Do you know if the gears are plastic?

I use an electric broadcaster on my 4wheeler for the smaller places(holds 50lbs) and then have a big 3pt for the other.
Have you thought about liquid? You can put out lime, fertilizer and spray weeds at one time. I use a 300gallon 21ft boom for my pastures but also get most of my yard when spraying weeds and have done the grasshopper fertilizer, they also have MoJo lime, just haven't used that. A 50gal. Should be enough on 2ac. And do it all one tank, maybe one with small boom and hand wond.

That is funny you suggested liquid, I was just looking at them in the Northern tool catalogue. Were do you buy liquid fertilzer?

That is a good question. I do not know the answer. Looks like I would have to take the gear box covers off to find out. If I have time later today I will do that. Looking at Earthway's website they just call it a super-duty gearbox??? I suspect they are probably some sort of plastic, but do not know.

I looked at the website and in the manual and did not see anything. You don't have to take yours apart.

Well TSC has some types, I get mine from the feed store the name of it is Grasshopper they have a web.site that also will tell you more about the Lime,it comes in a powder form that's water soluble. It will also give a name if dealer in your area,I also use it on my hay meadows some 30-8-10 blend and have some 42-0-0 I haven't used yet.

If you did deside to go the sprayer route, some have the really cheap pumps they usually just ride on tractor splin, the better units will have an actual shaft to pump. Tractor dealer local may have some if out and about, that are alittle more HD and will stand up for along time.

How narrow will it spread?
Roger, I reduced the spread area by not using at engine speed that produces 540 RPM. I reduced PTO speed and tractor speed in a small area that I had to get into to make a smaller spread. worked pretty well. I passed withing 10 feet of the owner and she never felt any thing hit her....When I passed her in the larger paddock, I was 25 feet away and at rated speed and she did feel some granules hit her...We were trying to lime and fix the fence at the same time. The deer had broken the fence (elect. wires) and she was replacing it...

You know, It just dawned on me.. slowing the engine speed does not work on my tractor. It is electrically operated. I did lessen the gap of the gates in the smaller paddock. I think thay may be why I did not throw
granules so far. I will have to check it out when I go back to finish the liming when the new run in shed is done. That area by the stable still needs to be done. Hmmm, back to the drawing board...lol.

If / when I get around to getting a spreader, this is what I'm going to try........

To build/invent some kind of deflectors (maybe adjustable) to modify the pattern it throws.
I'm going to presume with this adjustment and some practice with dry sand or something it can
be made to be more useable in odd areas and with different products....

A walk behind unit is a must for where the tractor spreader just isn't useful.

Thanks to whom is responsible for the attachment that shows the "orchard adapter"
That may be an idea to keep in mind for future homemade inventions.
Good luck

I went to TSC and looked around and could not find the liquid fertilizer, It was not with the granular. I asked a guy that worked there and he said yeah we have that it is back in the plumbing:shocked: They had a few different types. It is looking like a good option right now. I also found some liquid lime online and it looked to be less or about the the same as powdered lime. I was thinking of getting a ATV sprayer and building a frame to put on the 3PH. The only disadvantage I have seen about the liquid fertilizer is it does not last as long as granular. I'll look at some PTO sprayers.

But you still got it down to 10' by adjusting the gates.

You could always get one of the ATV tow behind types and they will do smaller areas like a walk behind.

I thought about that too. I would really like to get one unit to do it all if possible. I am also trying to stay away from a pull behind, I prefer that I is on the 3PH for better maneuverability.

I think some already have a adjustment to change the pattern or at least some of the walk behind spreaders do.

I finally got a spreader. I went with a spyker P40-5020. I gave the sprayer some serious thought but TSC does not stock the liquid fertilizer very well. It is also hard to find liquid lime. I am hoping with this spreader I can apply a top dressing, I guess I'll find out.

Pelletized lime will work great in that spreader, but it's only good for one year.
