Oil & Fuel Should I Use Transmission Fluid as Diesel Fuel Additive?

How many of us actually went and looked at mr dixon's link?!
He was trying to tell you that some stuff just don't belong in the diesel tank.
Let me know when y'all find the stuff in the study that actually makes the new diesel less slick than it was out of the pump.
Just trying to save you a little money on hard parts later.
Have a nice day.

One would be better off using a biodiesel/Dino diesel mix than adding ATF in a Diesel engine if lubicity is in question. Assuming the biodiesel meets ASTM diesel standards and not some home brewed biodiesel concoction, it will provide greater lubricity.

I concur with the posts that say follow your owners manual and or use products designed specifically as a diesel additive.

Personally, lubricity of low/ultra low sulfur diesel hasn't been a concern for any of our tractors or trucks. We've had more issues with water and other foreign substances in diesel fuel around here.

Do not use in on road trucks or cars. The red color will stay in fuel, and if you get checked, you could get fined for running off road fuel (No Tax)

Innocent until proven guilty. If they don't check it in a lab and you have the explanation and receipt nothing they can do.

Doghouse, are you referring to biodiesel? If so, biodiesel that is commercially available will be subject to the same dye requirements for on road/off road and taxation as Dino diesel. Home brewed biodiesel will be very difficult to meet the ASTM standards. The testing is cost prohibitive for most home brew biodiesel operations. ASTM Standards for Biodiesel to Be Published in October. I wouldn't use any biodiesel that doesn't meet the ASTM requirements.

If you are referring to the red dye in ATF I agree with your statement that the dye would be problematic if checked.

OK. Let me know how that works out. You actually think defending that position is worth it?

"citation is issued and a sample of the fuel is taken and forwarded to the Indiana Department of Revenue for analysis and assessment."
It's a $200 fine for the first offense for us. They take a picture of you holding your sample and then send it off to test it. (friend got busted in a farm semi) Not that hard to get proved innocent. At a $200 fine theoretically I would have already paid it off in savings.

Thanks to all of you for your replies and advice. I should have explained in my OP that the discussion with my friend came about when I mentioned to him that I have had the injector pumps on both of my tractors serviced/rebuilt. He recommended the use of tran. fluid to extend the life of the pumps and to provide lubrication. After reading your replies I am going to use a commercial product intended for diesel engines. As you can see from this link, I would be better served to protect my investment with the "real thing"!

Wbj-49, Hello neighbor! I'm not far from SSHS near thre fire department.

There's a guy over in Rockingham County that is growing canola and producing commercial biodiesel. He is also using waste cooking oil from the resturants to produce biodiesel. It all meets the Feds requirements to sell commercially and he sells it from his truck stop in Bassett, Va. I ran across him through my work.

Not advocating the use of biodiesel but just sharing about what's out there and not too far from home. My owners manual says not to use it.

Ted, Howdy! Thanks for the biodiesel info, but for the time being I'm going to stick with petroleum fuel. I'm afraid the biodiesel fumes would make me want f-fries too often!
