At fifty hours, I spoke with the dealer and was told I'd save a lot of money going with Hy-Guard rather than the super udt-2 for the transmission oil change on my L4240-hst. I followed his advice and pretty quickly noticed difficult shifting and a bit of whine that seemed new. So, yesterday I spent the morning changing out the transmission oil and replacing it with super udt-2 even though I'm only at 135 hours and, yes, it was expensive. However, the transmission now shifts smoothly, and the whine is gone. Also, although I had done the fifty hour maintenance, including the filter replacement prior to this, when I took the suction side filter off, the magnet was covered with metal - some looked like machining chips, but some looked more like what I'd expect from wear. I know this has been much discussed, and I figure my dealer was trying to be helpful, but I'll be using super udt-2 from here on.

Chalk another one on the board for the super udt. It's a great fluid and have heard many reports of improved hydraulic and transmission performance. Good choice!

Don't worry...the Walmart (Tractor Supply, Sam's Club, etc.) hydraulic boys will show up soon and tell you it doesn't matter. All of the hydraulic oil is made in one refinery or something like that.

However, my experience is just like yours. Quality hydraulic oil does make a difference.

The way I see it, I spent (err, actually still spending) a ton of money on machines that will hopefully last me a long time. I'm not dumping just any old fluid in either.

Agree, I spent a lot of money on my tractors and I don't want to pinch pennies on their blood. If I had old Junkers that oozed fluid from all their pores it would be different.

Same here at the 50 hour I changed fluid because I got a used backhoe with the tractor and it was topped off with UDT and when the Super UDT went in the GST shifted quicker and smoother. When 400 hours hit changed again and noticed the darker oil towards the bottom of the sump and the chatter I had going into 7th gear undr load went away. So fluid does age and collect moisture.

The cost difference really isn't that much once you figure in how much you paid for the tractor. There are a few good synthetic transmission oils on the market but they cost about the same and since any Kubota dealer should stock the SUDT oil it's the easiest to get.

I'm in agreement.....get what you pay for. Now if the snow will melt off and the ground thaws I have some stumps that need tending to!

I recently performed a full hydraulic service on my GL 3540. I drained out standard udt and replaced with super udt. My machine runs smoother and quieter on the super udt!
