Tractor
massey ferguson 135 vineyard
Hello, I'm from Gilroy, Ca.
I have a 1975? massey ferguson 135 vineyard tractor and it has been THE tractor for my vineyard all these years. The PTO is leaking oil. A friend has suggested just removing the seal and replacing it. In my research I have run across articles that talk about removing the PTO shaft. That sounds tricky to me. Is there a way to tell if the bearing needs removing as well as the seal? Do I have to remove the shaft to do either a bearing and seal replacement or just a seal replacement. The friend also suggested parking with the rear wheels higher so that I don't lose oil. Is this OK? I own and operate the Thomas Kruse Winery in Gilroy.

Good Afternoon Tom,
I havent replaced one on a MF 135 but have done my two old Farmalls.

I believe I ended up removing the PTO unit off of those tractors, dissasembling, and pressing out the old rear seal. I have heard of people, drilling and tapping a hole into the seal and using a threaded rod with small weight to reverse tap the old seal out. Although I didnt do it that way.

Also another thing to keep in mind when you have removed the old seal. The PTO shaft OD may be slightly worn where the old seal was contacting it. If possible try and position the new seal on an unworn spot on the shaft.

Yes you can raise the rear of the tractor up slightly, or just simply drain some lube out prior to changing the seal...:)

Thank you. I think the 135 is different from the Farmall as the PTO unit is integrated in the tractor body. I can't imagine taking the "unit" off. Just the PTO shaft is protruding.

Good Evenin Tom,
You can get the seal out using hand tools, you will have destroyed it in the process. The seal itself is nothing more than pressed sheet metal, durable rubber and a spring that usually wraps around the rubber at the seal point.

Hopefully one of the other guys on here can help more with that particular tractor...

Replacing the PTO seal is relatively easy. There is a O ring and a pressed in seal. Make note of which way the pressed in seal goes. I have a link to where I replaced mine. I used a Ghetto method of pulling the shaft out which came out quite easily. Getting the pressed in seal out was the hardest part. Here is how I did it. PTO output seal replacement. -kid
