Rotary Cutter New Rotary Cutter Set-Up Advice??

Hi everyone!

My new 1198W Hardee Rotary Cutter was delivered last week and I need some advice on how to make initial set-up adjustments. I am using it on a Ford 4610 and understand it needs to leveled using the tractor's third arm. I am not sure how to determine the correct height of the two tail wheels.

Any advice or tips is appreciated.

I use the tail wheel to essentially set the height of cut. Then adjust the main three point arms (lower) so that the front is just a bit lower than the back. The top link should be adjusted to swivel so that the cutter will follow the hills and dips. At about a 45 deg angle like that guide shows on page 6.

The manual you linked to is for a single spindle\single tail wheel model, however, it has more detailed information regarding the tail wheel. The tail wheel adjustment is not noted in the manual included with my cutter. Thanks!:thumbsup:

Yeah, you pretty much need to extrapolate from there to the 2 wheel model, but I run a single wheel and two wheel and the basics and general settings as to angle, top link etc. are the same. You might try a bit more research and find your particular model. Land Pride offers online manuals for all of their cutters and you might download one to see if there is something which might help you.

Regardless of the brand, they are all pretty much the same as to operation, torque and slip clutch setting will vary, but maybe this will get you started.

This manual is basically the same that I received with my cutter. I will check the Land Pride online manuals to see if they will help. I wouldn't want you to think I am totally lazy!

No, I'm guessing I am the lazy one as I didn't bother to check the details on the manuals. Once you start using it, you will figure it out fairly quickly and there are things not covered in the manual. While normally you will cut with the front edge lower, if you cut with the back lower, it will mulch; takes more power though.

Some people also substitute a chain fr the top link or back supports to allow the cutter to better follow the terrain. There are some pretty good old threads on here if you don't mind spending the time to find them, the search function leaves a little to be desired.

I have a LandPride 3PH cutter with two tail wheels (see sig). The manual is quite vague on setting the cutting height since it varies as to conditions.

JRobyn stated the method that I use. It is a trial and error thing. Of course, having a Top & Tilt makes it immensely easier.

The manual for my cutter (Bushog 280) is attached. It has pretty good setup/adjustment and maintenance instructions that should be applicable to most all cutters, including yours.

Thanks to all of you for your input! TripleR, the link to the TBN thread appears to be very detailed; I'm going to settle in and read it later. For some reason each post appears two times.

JRobyn, the Bushog manual is much simpler and has easier to understand instructions. The section giving instructions for shortening the drive line is going to be very useful for me. I found today, after hooking up the three - point hitch, that my drive line is too long. Something else to work on tomorrow!
